Cars are way more fuel efficient than ever. Try a '59 Bel Air if you
want thirsty.

Re: Message To America's Students: The War, The Draft, Your Future
Unfortunately, I have a laundry-list of "lust machines".
The list starts with a Porsche 550 Beck Spyder and an AC Cobra or Bristol
(but not the real thing - too damned expensive and I'd be terrified of
door-dings) plus a pair of Jaguar E-Types (one coupe and one roadster).
My more mundane dream vehicles are a Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser and an old
dirty banged-up 4WD Doge pickup with a Cummins diesel (not really "lust"
cars, but they would look good in a mud-fight).
Of course, I also want a custom-built racer like an Osca, HWM Chevrolet, or
Allard K2.
The hills of South West Virginia are made for these cars - logging roads on
one hand plus the Blue Ridge Parkway & Skyline Drive on the other.
Now, I just need the income and a wife who will support this habit... but
now I am dreaming!

I would beg to differ. I've been able to drive a fair number of
modern cars, large and small, over the last few years, and have found
them boring and numb, compared to my own (now 30-years old) car.

Over here it's the four-door pickup trucks and old jacked-up beater
trucks to watch out for. The cellphone crowd usually drives minivans
and BMW's puttering way below the speed limit and doing great
imitations of obstacles. I get around them and keep them behind me...

Heh. You won't catch me surfing or sky-diving, but four wheel drive
is something I've never had a use for. I grew up in Montreal where
it snows half the year and there's ice and freezing rain all the time. I
couldn't afford new tires back then, so I kept getting around on the
old bald ones. The quattro thing is probably very nice, but if you
know how to control what you have, that's preferable...
Just remember that maybe you have a lot of grip to get going, but they
all brake the same way, especially on slippery surfaces...

That would be with the dual quad 352 big block, right? '59 Bel Airs also
came with economical sixes. The thirstiest vehicle I ever had was a '79
3/4 ton Suburban. It got 13MPG on the open road doing 60. In town
the gas milage was under ten. I doubt that some of the big SUV's that
I see on the street today would do better...
My '95 Ford taxi is thirsty enough. At the rate it guzzles fuel I'll never
get that '79 Porsche 928 that I've wanted for the last 25 years...

My 78 E-250 Van gets like 1 mpg. I can watch the gauge move. But it's
great for haulin...
