Yep, it starts that way.
Unfortunately, the master cylinder is right in the way of the heat from the
radiator. It'll start acting up in hot weather, and get worse from there -
prolly because the aluminum casting expands and the worn seals lose some
contact with the bore. That's why, if you pour cold water on the cylinder,
it'll temporarily fix itself - enough to get you home in short hops.
Someone on Audifans have tried putting a homemade heat shield (made from a
pie tin or something) between the rad and the cylinder - but that fix only
postponed the inevitable MC replacement.

I successfully used a sheet metal heat shield on my 1987 5000S, after the
garrage replaced the brake master cylinder twice in vain.
