Can't Remove Battery Cover on 98 Quatro.
I need to replace the battery on the above car and I need to remove the
cover that runs the width of the engine compartment so I can get the battery
out. Any ideas on who to remove it?
TIA

You might ask a sales person at a place where you bought (or about
to buy) your new battery. I don't know who else.
BTW, my 98 Quattro doesn't have anything like that. Are you talking
of the engine hood? It pops when you pull a small T-shaped handle
located on the left above the clutch pedal. If you already have done
that, then what other cover? I recently replaced the battery in my
2.8Q and didn't have to remove anything but the lower right (passenger
side) bolt (with a small rectangular plate) that held the battery in
place. Well, and disconnect the two cables, of course...

Before you got to that bolt, you had to have removed the cabin air filter
carrier, the long rubber seal running the width of the engine compartment, and
the passenger side lower window trim panel that the seal holds in place.
I suspect it is with these items that the OP is having difficulty...

Really? Nope. Didn't have to. Unscrewed the bolt and pulled the
battery out, then put the other one in and put the bolt in place.
Could it be my car is missing all those things?

Is it an A4 2.8 or an A6 2.8? The A6 got this cover above the battery that
run the whole width of the engine bay - and is easily removed by 1/2 turns
on some plastic screws in the front end of the cover. Don't think the A4 got
it (at least not the 1.6).

My A4 2.8 Quattro has a cover over the battery etc. It also runs the whole
width of the engine bay. It has a small cover over the battery for
inspection but it would be impossible to remove the battery through it. I
suspect the large cover needs removing to gain access.

I don't know exactly what model/year this is, but if It's a B5 A4/S4 it's
definitely missing at least the two lower windshield valence pieces and the
battery access cover...

Alright. I decided to get a third opinion and got Chilton A4/Passat
repair manual. Whaddya know, it has pictures. Yes, an A4 with a 4-
cylinder engine has what the OP (and you) probably talk about: a large
cover in the back of the engine compartment with four areas with many
small holes, with one kinda round hole where the brake fluid reservoir
is, and another, elongated, where the battery is. And (the drumroll
please) an A4 with a 6-cylinder engine does not have that. Why? I
don't know. So, I guess, we can now say for sure. And to the OP:
sorry, I can't help you. Somebody who has a 4-cylinder A4 should be
able to.
Oh, mine _is_ a 1999 B5 A4Q, 2.8L V6.
