There were only a few years where the engine design was such that a failed
WP would cause a TB failure, so in the grand scheme of things, it's probably
not very common. But it's not impossible either.
Usually, the most common reason for TB failure is a prematurely (if you look
at Audi's replacement recommendations) broken TB tensioner. But whatever
the cause (broken tensioner or seized WP), the result is generally the same:
bent valves on the engine.
Those who are "in the know" replace the TB, tensioner, rollers, and WP every
60K miles, just to be safe.

Audi UK now schedule timing belt change on all cars at four years/60k
miles, whichever comes sooner (except the RS6, which is three years).
This applies retrospectively, to all models with a timing belt.
