HORRIBLE Knocking/Ticking in Engine (Video Attached) '05 Audi A6
Got oil change done and my 100,000 kms service at Audi dealership and now I have this horrible knocking/ticking sound coming from the engine. It gets louder and faster on revs. Happened once before but went after warming up the engine. This time however, I came back from the dealership so the engine was well warm. Any clues as to what it might be?
It's a 2005 Audi A6 3.2 FSI. 104,000 kms ... Service was done today itself at Audi. Always use Shell 91.
I tried searching online but couldn't find anything exactly like what i have. Although did find some videos on YouTube where people suggested checking on cam tensioners and other stuff. It sounds like lifters to me or maybe the injectors but, this car had the 85,000 km service as well in which new injectors were installed (not sure) ... Has anyone ever had something similar to this?
Here's the video .. Tried my best to capture it.
Thanks in advance for your input. Please let me know if you need more info or another video.

yep ... the knocking was so loud that my neighbours woke up to it ... lol
Well .. on a serious note, yes, the problem seems to be fixed .. it was the cam tensioners, all 4 (2 intakes and 2 exhaust), which were completely out of alignment and were worn out. I got the chain changed at the same time as well... the older models had a chain guide which was made out of plastic and there was a revision to it. So got those changed as well... the mechanic found some damage on the inside of the block caused by the chain flopping all over the place. He repaired that part ...
All in all .. costed me about $5000 but the car is good for another 200k and seems to be running solid. good lord the aftermath of keeping an out of warranty Audi ... never again lol

Just seems funny that it began after a dealership oil change? It must have be so gradual that you never noticed the frequency?
Glad to hear all is well.
I'm looking at a 08 A6 4.2 this week and see how it stacks up to an A8.

The 4.2 engine on my B7 developed similar noise. Do you mind forward me the info on the garage you took your car to? I'd like to have them check mine out.
Thanks in advance!

This just happened to my dad I think...
I always had a faint knocking sound but recentely it just amplified and Im getting misfirings on 1 side only...
does it have to be the chain and tensioners or could it be possibly sludge since saying he did not follow proper maintenance recommendation is an understatement...

2005 Audi A6 4.2L. I believe we are short of the 100,000km(60,000mi ) mark. We have the characteristic noise at intial start up which has been addressed replacing chains, guides, tensioners and cam adjusters. Engine is assembled in and tested. Client had complained of this " alleged " loud noise that would occur after start up that lasted upwards of ten seconds but we never heard it. We heard it for the first time and are considering intake flap noise? This is obviously a seperate noise of the one we were initially targeting. Have you gone through this? I understand there was a bulletin out a while ago on this matter but i have since been unable to locate where Audi just wanted the intake replaced. What are you thoughts on my options? What have you done in the past? r.k. ( teerex_1@hotmail.com)
