Seems to be a bullet proof engine... and a 3.2L 2.5ton SUV just doesnt make sense - at least not if you plan on pulling anything.

On highway I've had as much as 800 km on full tank (90litres) and didn't push it into gas station Generally getting about 14L/100km mixed mileage with horrible city conditions. Depends on your driving style . I also never use anything less than 94 Octane (R+M/2), old Sunoco Gold. Definitely has more power than with lower octane fuels. I'm not worried about Ethanol at all. Max they use is 10% and these engines and components are made and approved for that. I've been using 94 Octane for >200,000km and it hasn't caused any problems (that I know of). I never required any engine work of any kind until recently (250,000km). Not only did I feel the extra power when I changed after a low Octane tank, but mileage on highway is a bit better.

Does the A6 have the same size tank as the A8?

According to spec the D2 A8's fuel tank is 90L, the C5 A6 tanks are 70L (2.8 and 2.7T) or 82L (4.2). Not sure if the AllRoad uses a different volume tank.

We have gotten 900km on road trips before. We can get better than 11 L/100km combined city and highway but generally are closer to 12 L/100km on 91 octane.

I had my car since March 2011 and these are my findings.

2007 C6 A6 4.2 (80L tank) running 91oct
HWY avg 8.8L/100km @ 110km/h
CTY avg 14-15L/100km @ various take off speeds. Half the time in "S" mode.

So far I love this engine. Solid platform.
