Considering buying an A6...
hello all
i'm considering buying a used a6 either 3.2 or 4.2, not sure yet (2005-2007 model). i had a few questions before proceeding.
1) in your experience...what are the pros and cons over other mid sized cars ('05-'07)? i.e - gas mileage, reliability,
2) how much do you spend on maintenance on average/year? i've read that there are issues with the software and that accessories are quiet pricey.
3) do you always fill up with 91/94 or would 89 also work without harming the engine?
all answers are appreciated! if there is another thread on the topic, do post a link!
thanks

Re: Considering buying an A6...
Currently, I have a 3.2Q. Its an 07 S-line A6.
The pros on this car is that its solid to drive. I got this car as an after lease and it had 85k. I was prepared to take another risk on maintenance (coming from a passat with lots of issues) but to my surprise, the car is pretty strong. Reliability is great. Gas mileage, its decent. I opted out of the 4.2 because I drove my father's s430 back then prior to purchasing my a6 and it was a gas guzzler. As much as I would love to hear the sound of a v8 engine, i chose the more conservative v6. Its not too bad.
Preventative maintenance cost doesnt come cheap but it keeps the car healthy and it holds the car strong. Since owning it in 2010, i've spent around 2000k for scheduled and preventative maintenance (complete brake job, oil changes, health checks and two engine lights). I dont tamper with the computer and i've had no problems at all. OEM accessories are expensive but kijiji and ebay are my friends.
Gas: I always fill it with 91. Never 89. Why take the risk? Its factory recommended and plus my dad and I tried it on his v6 passat back then and we felt the lag in power. I occassionaly put in 94 if the price comes a bit cheaper once in a blue moon. but on a regular basis; its 91.
I hope this helps. I'm selling my car right now not because it has problems but i need something bigger, family is growing, but yeah, I'll come back getting an a6 tdi in the future.
