Cats bad, not O2s, what caused?

Re: Cats bad, not O2s, what caused?
Hey Hasbin... wondering how you made out with you cat converter issues?
My MIL light just popped on (again) the other day, and it's pointing to a cat that's running 'less than efficient'. My mechanic cleared it, but it sounds like I may have to address them soon.
What did you end up doing?

If you get a MIL for a bad cat and you are within Emissions Warranty time period and mileage, you should contact Audi for a warranty replacement at no to little cost to you.

Hi pzzazz
I did have it looked at by some knowledgable Audi folk...it is the rear cat that is making all the racket, and according to them, it will never trip the MIL light as the sensor is at the front of it! So the criteria for Audi for that to happen before warranty would be considered sounds like it will not happen with mine. I am going to try and talk to Audi Canada to see if they will help, as the rattling out of the right rear cat is loud, constant and annoying. Other than them helping out, guess I will have to look at replacing on my own...in which case, I highly doubt it will be with Audi OEM, or be done by the dealer. Let me know what happens with yours... as I will do when something happens! cheers!

Re: Cats bad, not O2s, what caused?
I have a 98 A6 2.8L NON-quattro (my name refers to my nephew and for love of my car!)...which is why I started this post.
Both of my rear cats are bad (the 2 you can see if your car is lifted, the other 2 are further up in the engine i think), and my MIL light definitely comes on. And it stays on! Both are bad because they both rattle when hit with something, but now I need control arms also on my front passenger side. Those may be first...cheaper and safer.
Several people told me the O2 sensors can rust and be difficult or impossible to put back on even if they aren't broken. You may need to replace them anyway just so they can be reattached. Does anyone know about this?
Also, I was told, if you order the cats yourself, to ensure the gaskets are included. Apparently some come with gaskets and some don't...you need them! Of course if you go to the dealer, they would take care of that.
I knew the parts for this car would be expensive, but somethimes I wonder if it's worth it...
But then I go get in my car and know it is!! I love my car, I just wish I could afford to get it up to par SOON!
Good Luck to All!

Re: Cats bad, not O2s, what caused?
Hey,
My husband used to work at a foreign parts store and still gets his discount. They laid him off due to the economy, but they still like him!! Good for me with an Audi!!
List for the cats was $750, but they'll sell to me (at cost?) for around $400 each. One was $3** and one was $4**...to average out about $400 each. I found some on-line for about $300 each, but no one has heard of the company...it was "Something Environmental Catalysts" I think...just went on-line to try to find and found Bosal (the brand from the foreign parts store), and they were about $350 each on-line at Partstrain.com. Not sure if I should just go to the store or buy on-line.
If I need to use the warranty, it would be MUCH easier throught the store...is it worth $100 more?? Every part can't be made perfectly, and that would be my luck (!) to get a bad part...
I need front passenger control arms too...any ideas? Inexpensive places to buy?
Thanks
