Have to r&r rear diff in 01 a6. Any hints from anyone. I want to have it rebuilt cause the 5k that Audi wants for the diff is a little pricey.

Are sure that the problem is the rear diff and maybe not the prop shaft (center drive shaft) rear cv joint or the associated cv joints on the individual rear drive shafts.

I'm pretty sure its the diff. I had a volkwagen and an audi dealer both diagnose the same problem.

1. Parts manual
2. Service manual
3. Special Tools and a press
4. Hand tools
5. Hoist
6. Remove rear wheels
7. Drop out exhaust and heat shields
8. Remove drive shaft (don't misplace the shims and mark both flanges)
9. Remove half shaft outer bolts
10. Remove rear brakes (inspect while apart)
11. Remove parking cable clips and ties
12. Mark and disconnect the lower eccentric
13. Remove half shaft inner bolts
14. Lower rear control arm and remove half shafts
15. Remove final drive hardware
16. Remove final drive
17. Replace damaged components via service manual including all seals and gaskets
18. Install in the reverse order

Or find a used one.

I have a similiar problem with my differential. There is a small oil leak emanating form the seal. Would mine need to be rebuilt as well?

If there are no differential noises and only a leak, replace the seal ASAP.

2.5 hrs book labor per rear diff seal. Common to leak with higher mileage. Don't leave it until it starts whining!

Check all driveline seals as another common one to leak is trans rear output shaft seal.

ya my rear diff leaked had it fixed under warrnty . i guess it is pretty common

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. The only thing wrong was the pinion bearings were shot. I replaced all bearings and seals while it was apart. Ordered them direct from audi and had it put back together by the nice guys at "The Gear Centre" in Lethbridge. Installed it and it is fantastic. Smooth and quiet like a luxury sedan should be. The r&r was fun. Its been a while since I played 'back yard mechanic'. Cost me about $900CAD. Not bad considering the dealership wanted $5k CAD for a new diff.

ya i guess they have to make money just like everyone else . 5k is kinda harsh
