now, when i bought my 2003 audi a6 4.2, the guy told me, (which was not at an audi dealership) that when the car starts cruising in 5th gear, 2 or 4 of the cylinders shut off to save gas.
I went to my local audi dealership and I asked a rep there, he wasn't too sure.
Now I may be ignorant, but if anybody can clarify this for me, that would be great.

I dont think that could be true. It also defeats the purpose of an 8, which is to give smooth power..........

A lot of the newer V8's have this kind of feature, most dodges for sure, they call it multi displacement system or something like that, basically switching off 4 of the 8 cylinders when cruising on the highway below a certain rpm range.

Don't think the v8 in our car has it though, as fuel economy on a luxury v8 is really far down the list.

Absolutely not on our 4.2L's. GM tried on their Caddy's awhile back and it didn't reduce the fuel consumption. The remaining cylinders just worked harder.
