Default 2.7t oil pressure light on (red can) HELP!

Hi everyone,

A thanks in advanced to anyone that can help me out with my problem.

I will give all the information i can of my problem to help any of you help me!

I have a 2000 audi a6 2.7t with 230,000 km

The red oil can (dripping oil) is turning on in my car, only at operating temp (right when it hits the middle mark) and only when i start driving. It beeps 3 times and stays on (flashing). After i turn off the car and turn it back on it will not go on until i start driving and it hits opperating temp again.

I have scanned the car with a full version vag com software and no unusual codes poped up other then oxygen sensors being bad.

I also noticed if you go into instrumments in vag com and click on measering blocks, then go to channel 1. you can see this : oil.press.ok (somthing like that) before my light turns on. When it turns on it will say oil.press.min.

Basicly, i have no idea if this is a sensor issue or not as i do not hear any noises coming from the engine or power loss at all. It runs smooth! It previously had the camtensioner and valve cover seals replaced as they were leaking. heads seemed well lubricated. I have been driving the car with the light on for a couple of days with no issues what so ever.

I would put a pressure gauge to it but it is unbelievably hard to get to the oil press switch on this motor. Almost impossible without taking so many parts off.

PLEASE someone help me figure this out as the stealership will charge me 2 hours or more labour to check the pressure. Which i will end up doing later on (funds are low)

Did you even consider the oil viscosity? Did you just have the oil changed at a quicky lube
Use a synthetic oil like that bi-turbo deserves.

it is full sythetic! and the light still comes on. i even flushed it with diesel and changed the oil to sythetic with new filter. i used 10 w 30 mobile one for now. Im sure this wont change the pressure very much or at all. Engine runs smooth. shakes a bit, but nothing big.

You may not have a choice in this case. A pro is required to test that system now.

I am having the EXACT same problem. I already bought the switch but at the moment don't have a guide. Can you tell me where the oil pressure switch is on the engine?

well on a4 engines there is a wire running on top front part of the engine check if it ripped. I had the same thing, all i did is soldier it back together and bam!!! If car runs fine and its just that light, thats the most common case, happens all the time :P

So, I decided to make this thread because I searched the internet ( not very thoroughly, admittedly) for a DIY on how to change my oil pressure sender in my s4. Alldata says it takes 1.4 hours, but gives no other info. Bentley manual says nothing. Ive read stories about people taking off their oil filter housing and whatnot just to get to it, but i knew there had to be an easier way! So, here is my how-to, it took about a half hour.

Tools needed:
tiny screwdriver
allen wrench (i believe 5 or 6mm)
19mm socket
17mm socket and torque behind it
15/16" socket
13mm socket
socket wrench

1. Raise and support vehicle

2. Remove wheel

3. Remove belly pan, drain all oil

4. Observe ridiculous amounts of lost oil (2 quarts a week i got up to)

5. Using screwdriver, remove left lower intercooler hose

6. Using 5 or 6mm allen, remove these two bolts that hold the metal IC pipe. Then lift the pipe up and back and hang up on top of the oil filter housing

7. Using 13mm socket, undo the four sway bar bolts and pull sway bar down

the black piece with the white wire just above the oil pan is that little bugger. leaking all my oil...

8. Using a tiny screwdriver, put it in the lower square opening on the switch and twist, just like all VW connectors. Pry that baby off

9. Using the deep 15/16" socket (standard, yes, but it fit the best for some reason) and a small extension, unscrew the pressure switch. Make sure ALL oil is drained, or else:

it spills all over the floor. When you tighten the new switch, dont do it too tight, it wasnt in there too tight to begin with. I also used a wee bit of thread tape, just to be safe.

Ok! All done. Enjoy your lack of an oil leak
