Default Winter tire recommendation?

I own a 2013 A4 Quattro with the basic Pirelli 17" tires (245/45, H rated). It's the time of the year to start thinking about winter tires. Does anybody have recommendations? I want to keep the same size and speed rating as my current tires.

It depends on what winter is like where you are. I've had Blizzaks (WS 50, WS 60, WS70) and they've been great. Awesome on snow and ice, and ok on dry pavement. The WS70's are better in dry conditions than the previous versions.

I've also had two sets of Pirellis (210, 240) and not liked them. The Pirellis were fine on dry pavement, but not much better than all-seasons on snow and ice.

My S4 has Continental WinterContacts, and I'm very happy with them. Good all around, dry, wet, snow. I'd buy these again for sure.

I had an '08 A4 with 18 inch all season P6 Pirelli's and ran them all year round with no real issues, (I live in Winnipeg). My latest A4 came with the 19 inch Conti's and they are not all season so I have ordered some wheels and a set of 225-50/17 Nokian Hakkapaleta R's for the up coming winter season. I have experience with the original Rsi's and they were great, the R's are the next generation so I expect they will also do well. I'll post an update when I have had a chance to evaluate them. There are plenty of good winter tire choices available you just have to decide what is best for your situation.

I disagree on the Pirelli 240's I have ran both versions and have had them for about four winter seasons and love them. In my opinion if you drive spirited on these tires you will love them in winter as this is what they are meant for. I truly enjoy them and I would highly recommend them. If you drive very slow in winter then these are not for you.

I am not saying that you should drive it like a race car and an idiot in winter, but they perform very well in ice snow and slush.

I picked up the Bridgestone WS70. I've used WS60 before on my old BMW rear wheel drive and they never got me stuck even in deep snow, or going up the ski mountain. With the Quattro it should be even better.

Go to FCP Tires (google it). They are on the south-shore of Montreal. they will set you up with replicas + tires.... good pricing. Way cheaper than the dealership. I did have Pirelli 240 - and they were good.

Anyone tried running with 16" wheels for winter tires? Would these fit a 2012 A4?
225 55 R16

Thanks,

Dunlop M3 Winter Sport all the way, lasted me about 3 long winters and still would be fine for a 4th. Amazing traction all around, grip like heck on dry pavement. i think a few of us here have used them and highly recommend them.
