Wow...some serious discussions here. Thanks for all your inputs. If I am buying the 09 A4, it is going for around $41K +tax (with Premium + Tech pkg with about 16K Km) here in Toronto. This means that I will have the remainder of the factory warranty and will also buy the extended one for additional two years or upto 120K Km. This means that I have to do all the services with the dealer to keep the warranty in effect. I am hearing that the older 1.8T engines do have issues and the new ones seem to be fine. Some of you really scared me off, but that is OK as I would like to know the truth anyways.

audimontreal: I think I am in the same boat as you were before, drove Civic Si, Nissan 240SX, CRV etc. and want to upgrade to a premium vehicle.

PhinX404: I like your comments because they didn't scare me As I said before, if I buy the extended warranty I will be forced to service with the dealer. I think an oil change may cost about $200 (CDN). Do you know how much the breaks and tires cost? Just to get an idea.
Another question is that if I buy an extended warranty from one dealer, do I have to go to the same dealer to get the service or can I go anywhere? The A4 comes with scheduled maintenance included during the warranty period. The reason is that the dealer close to my home is pricing the A4 at least $2K more than the one that is about 60Km away.

thanks!

Ill add my 2 cents worth,

I drive a 2004 A4 Multitronic CVT 1.8T, have had it for over 2 years now and 2 days ago i passed the 190,000km mark!! even took a pic of it with my cell!

So far ive done the timing belt/tensioners etc/waterpump replacement @ 140km and that cost me around $800.
Ive had to replace 2 sensors, one temperature sensor and an o2 sensor, both together cost me $400 with labor @ Audi Winnipeg.

then my Transmission Control Unit went @ 175km and cause no garage will touch my transmission around here i had to go to Audi Winnipeg and that cost me $2200 to fix.

other than that i do my oil changes at 7,000-10,000km with Castrol 0Wx30 Full Synthetic depending on what kind of driving ive done. that usually costs me around $50-60 for oil and filter and now i do my own oil changes this way i know that i let ALL the oil drain out.

had to replace a few bulbs here and there but thats pocket change.

oh almost forgot cause it didnt cost me anything, they replaced the coil packs for free!

hope this helped!

Dan

Yes I had 1.8 on my jetta and loved it. The fuel was below 10 liters per 100!

The reason that my expenses have been higher recently is my daughter who passesd her drivers licence exam class7 at the age of 14. She can drive now and she was succesful in engaging the car into 2nd gear at the speed of 120km/hr. I replaced the tranny and when doing so the clutch as well since it was all out.
I also got REMUS straight flow exhaust system, which I am so happy with since it adds 20% more power to the car and it sounds great ( nothing like those flashy Honda exhausts - It is a real thing)

I am not an expert but I will tell you from my experience with my 2006 B7
Front Brake will cost you around $550 (dealer price), the rear around the same
, but it is very easy to do it your self. Parts will cost you around $280-$300 if you changed rotors and pads, $80 just for the pad. You don’t have to change the rotors if they are in a good shap. Done it and it is very easy as I mentioned

Oil around $ 125 +tax, some other shops will do it for $80, not worth to do it yourself

Tires? Depends on what tire you are getting, I would say around $ 1500 +/- a lot

Make sure you change your timing belt and water pump every 115,000 km. Around $1200 (dealer). other shops might charge you around $ 800

Air-condition compressor seized, it cost $1500, I was lucky it was covered under the CPO

If I were you I would get the Audi car plan from the dealer, this is the mistake I made by not getting it when I got my car

I get around 26-28 mpg .

I have around 140,000 km , with no major issues .

It is a beautiful car, safe, luxury, but it is not as fast as some people say unless you chip it which might require some additional modifications. That is my 2 cents.

Good luck

All I know is if there is half a meter of snow on the ground I do not have to shovel it around tha car to go to work. My neighbours come and ask about my tires as they do not know that Audi is a 4X4.

For tires I think you need to go Michelin to take the full advantage of the machine. They will be at $1200.00 to $1500.00, but you will put lotsa rubber on the ground for your offroading, sand dune and mud and ice/deep snow driving.

You can also use cheap tires and since AUDI is a 4X4 they will do just fine. You do not need winter tires or any crap like that.

All engines have their share of issues if you want peace of mind simply get a Honda or another Japanese appliance car It all comes to what you want and what is important to you
Older generations Audis like yours did have above average problems/issues.
MACPS is in another boat as he is considering a 2009!
German car is NOT an econo box so obviously it will cost more but there are ways to keep your maintenance reasonable that is all

Let's not scare him off...that is all
I only had one Jap for 7 days in 1986. It would not move in straight line.
Hit some snow and you are in the ditch!

@adam

I am unclear of your tone about "AUDI SLOW", if sarcasm was intended. I've never reached 255km/h on because I wouldnt attempt that on a highway risking my life and others, and getting a ticket. I've seen videos on youtube that it can reach 200km within 30seconds +

The maintenance and reliability all depends on the year you get. 1996-2001 had their flaws. Biggest issue were the design of the control arms, which i believe were also carried onto the B6 Platform. Also the B5 platform had poor timing belt tensioner quality.

I'll admit, i've never really dragged against someone, in fear i will lose so bad. V6 2.8 has 190HP at the crank. Minus auto trans, maybe down to 175hp. Minus AWD, maybe down to 140hp lol....I love my car though

We belong to Audiforum.ca because we share a common bond, being the ownership of the Audi brand. I love the performance, look, luxury and allround appeal of my car. That being said other manufacturers make decent cars as well. Lets face it if we owned Hondas and liked them as many do we wouldn't be on this site. I am reluctant to put down any other brand (unless its a Lada) or bash the owners of those brands. The video below will attest to the fact that other brands make some decent cars and I wouldn't hesitate purchasing any one of those.

For Acura and Infinity I do not like when this plastic inside hits me in the face first thing in the morning.
My Boss has Infinity and he turned back from his business trip in January 2009, between Calgary and Edmonton (good highway) because of the snow on the road.
He said that he needed winter tires. "SURE BOSS" I answered you need WINTER TIRES!

Soo... He went to COSTCO and bought himself winter tires. It snowed some more that day and he asked another employee for a ride home to Bragg Creek in his truck and left the Jap parked overnight at work.

On the other hand my daughter called me from the daycare one day that she had bad earache. I can not even imagine that I would not be there for her if she needs me.
