Default Engine's burning oil at a rate of 1 quart a week

Hello fellow Audi owners, this is my first post. Just wanted to see what every thinks about this particular issue because i've been experiencing this for a while now.

So basically what the title says, my A4's engine's burning oil at the rate of 1 quart a week, now I drive less than 150km a week and it just seems crazy that an engine can burn oil at this rate. I bought this car from a used car dealer and I noticed it after 20 days of buying it that the car seems to be burning a lot of oil and when I confronted the dealer he simply said the issue is "normal" with Audi's. I tried talking to Audi about this but they want me to spend $600 just to see if it actually eats up that much oil but its clear that it does eat a tonne of oil. And even after I get the test done, there's no guarantee what so ever that they'll fix it. Now I asked them if they can take a report from a 3rd party dealer outlining the issue (i'm using a 3rd party mechanic's report because he's willing to do the diagnosis for absolutely free) but they won't accept that either.

What do you guys think might be the problem? I researched a little and found out that piston's might be the issue.

How much do you guys think it would cost me?

It's the pistons. If the car is still under warranty, ask the dealer to do an oil consumption test. At that rate, they should replace the pistons.

Just had the same problem with my 2010 a4 ... finally fixed. Audi did a Oil Consumption test. stage 1 replace crankcase breather valve and seal / re-adjust pully.. didnt solve anything so i took it back they did stage 2 of the test and they had to replace the pistons/rings. Problem Fixed ! I still called head office and made a huge scene because I just bought this car with 78k km on it and they shouldn't have to replace pistons.. its practically a new car and essentially they had to rebuild my engine..

EXACT same scenario with my 2010 A4. Have a new engine now

Yep...I'll be joining the new pistons and rings club next week for my 09 CPO that I purchased a year and half ago. Will let you know how it goes. I've read on other blogs that if the pistons and rings don't solve the issue or if the tech notices significant issues with the block or cylinders while they're in there that Audi will take further steps...I've even heard of new engines being installed!

For those who've had the rings/pistons done what were the results? What did you do for break in? Cheers

After the pistons and rings were done, the engine stopped burning oil. Period. Not a drop.

As far as break in, just don't drive it aggressively for 1000 km and you should be fine.

I've got a 2010. My engine burns 1 qt every 2500 kms... but I only put 6000kms a year so I think I'm going to live with it unless it's a forebear of other issues down the road (doesn't appear to be, based on researching on the internet)

Mine was consuming almost 1.4 Ltrs per 1000K. New pistons and rings as of today. Will repost results. I was fortunate that it was still under CPO warranty...that said Audi should really cover this cost regardless of warranty period. 1.4 Ltrs every 1000k is completely unacceptable. There obviously was a problem with the early B8s. My advice...keep any eye on it and don't be afraid to hassle your dealer. I've loved audis since my father first bought a 5000s in 1980. The company needs to do the right thing and address this issue if it expects continued loyalty.

I think i'm only restating what everyone has said here, if you notice your car is burning oil, just take it in and get a oil consumption test. It's going to take a some time out of your day, but they can calculate the rate and it will auto qualifies you if you are burning at a higher rate.

This problem is not with the car, but with the engine. I had the exact same issue on my 2006 VW Passat 2.0, same scenario. When I bought the 2010 Audi A4, it was all over again. Somewhat dissappointing, but it's a fix that's covered under warranty.

For the person who said they are going to leave it because you don't drive more than 6,000km a year, I would say get it fixed. You never know when things are going to change and you definitely don't know what else the burning oil may cause. Just get it fixed. They will give you a rental if you need it, so the trouble is just bringing the car in.

Hope this helps.
