Re: A4 High Oil Consumption: Mark Motors Says it's normal
hey guys, heres a trick to get a new engine.
get an oil consumption test done, next time you go in, drain a litre of oil and ask for another, if they still dont give you an engine, drain a litre and a half and ask for the test again.

Re: A4 High Oil Consumption: Mark Motors Says it's normal
Hi - I know I might be a foreigner (from Australia) but my A4 1.8T is having this oil problem too. It is a 2010 brand new car and I have to top up my oil at about every 1,000km. Finally, I managed to convince the dealer to do an oil consumption test. It came back negative - my car is guzzling 1 litre of oil per 800km (normal range is 1000km per 1 litre). They are now asking me to come back at the end of this week to do more test so that they can ascertain which part to replace. I must say I am very concerned about this oil problem. Of course, those Audi people keep on telling me it is normal for an Audi to consume oil.

Have any mechanics or technicians chimed in on this issue??? Adding even ONE litre of oil per 1000kms doesn't seem normal for ANY car. Hell, BMW claims their cars to not need an oil change for a whole year and even longer!

Re: A4 High Oil Consumption: Mark Motors Says it's normal
BMW may only need an oil change once a year but if you read the owners Manila it will say to check the oil level regularly like every other fill up. Every car manufacure will have this in their manual. Every engine burns oil. Be it he piston rngs or the valve guides or both. It's to lubricate the upper cylinders and the valve guides. Over te these parts wear and gaps get bigger causing more then normal oil consumption. Most cars will burn 500ml- a liter of oil per 1000km. Don't quote me on this but my teacher who wOrks for vw currently and has been a mechanic for over 15 years said( I think ) vw says 1 liter per 1000 km is normal. If you don't believe me check your owners manual and I bet it tells you 1 liter per 1000 km is acceptable.

I don't doubt this at all. It only makes sense as piston rings and valve guides CAN'T be totally sealed but my 02 A4 doesn't burn this amount at all. If anything it may burn 1 litre every 1500 kms. Like you, don't quote me on this but it sure seems that way.

Well not all engines are the same. Some may burn more than others. I wouldn't be happy about a liter every 1000 either. My 97 Honda burns half a liter every 3000 km. Most burn way more than that.

Apparently the owners manual clearly states that it is normal for 1000km per 1 litre of oil. The Audi dealer was quick to point that out to me.

I would accept that as normal on the Autobahn, driving at the electronically limited top speed. In North America, I think there is a problem with the car.
Especially at the price I pay for VW spec Mobil 1. I use one quart in 15000 KM, driving fairly mild.

Re: A4 High Oil Consumption: Mark Motors Says it's normal
At the price of the VW spec Mobil oil, I have always taken it to the Audi dealer to have it topped up (when the add oil light comes on), it takes 5 minutes and they do it while I wait (as they should). It's not really the cost savings that I'm trying to achieve, but also to document the high oil consumption should there be any long term service issues. But making the trip to Audi may not be convenient for everyone.
