All these measures can be quirky. I use the fuel gauge only to confirm that I have plenty of gas. After it gets low, I switch to the display of miles remaining on the trip computer. That drops too fast. E.g. It can drop from 50 to 15 miles remaining in 20 miles. The computer is making an estimate: it goes in 5 mile increments, and I think it bases the estimate on a relatively small number of most recent miles driven.
