Default 8 speed tiptronic any good?

I used to have a Golf CL, then an Orange 2000 GTI (loved that car), then an A4 - then my wife convinced me to get a Lexus 350RX SUV - becoming a Russian serf would have been less painful... now I am back thinking about getting a 2012 A4 Avant (no choice 3 kids).

My only problem is the damn thing doesnt come in manual, only this new 8 speed tiptronic thingy I have never heard about...

Question: is it any good?

I have only had mine for 3 months, but nothing negative to say about it. Seems to launch the car fast when you drive it that way....and seems to keep it in a gear to help with gas mileage when you are driving for that.

Love it. It's nice to cruise at 1600 rpm at 120k.

Put it in sports mode and it's faster than manual.

i find that mine is jerky at low speeds 10km/h (think bumper to bumper traffic on the highway where you gas a second and let go) probably the downshifting and upshifftng, seems like the computer doesn't handle that speed well. also rolling stops for me, it stays on 3rd gear and the response is very slow from there, almost like a lag. other than those two situations, everything else is fine.

I get the same results when I am in D or S and in rush hour traffic. I just switch over to manual mode and use the paddles and don't have that problem anymore.

I had the same problem and the dealer as applied two TCM updates. The most recent has improved the stop-and-go traffic behavior.

TSB# 2025272/1

Now the only problem is when there are abrupt application of the throttle. It still seems to kick down harshly. I'm waiting for a third and final patch for that
