Default A4 High Oil Consumption: Mark Motors Says it's normal

After my episodes with consistent high oil consumption, I decided to take it into Mark Motors here in Ottawa (Hunt Club Road, Audi Dealer) to see what they had to say. I have documented all my high oil consumption issues -- yes, I have taken pictures of my dashboard with warning messages, and mileage since it started.

The service rep (who by the way made me feel like I was bothering him) told me the following:

1. Have you read the manual -- it talks about high oil consumption. I answered, yes, and if you read the manual you would also see that this refers to breaking in the engine. "Depending on the way the vehicle is driven and the operating conditions, oil consumption can be UP to 1/2 quart per 600 miles or 0.5 liter per 1000km). Consumption may be higher within the first 5000km. (My car has 17,000km, well beyond 500km).

2. He said my 1litre of oil every 1000-1200km is normal. I said, really? 1 litre of oil per 1000km is "normal" That falls way beyond what it mentions in the manual:

OIL 1 quart =.94 liters EVERY 1 mile = 1.6 km
OIL Consumed - 2 liters in 2400km - That is 30% beyond the 'normal' range

He said, I could book an appt for you if you really want and we can do an oil consumption test, you would have to get your oil changed here, etc. I said no problem, I'll do anything it takes to solve this. Because this is not "normal" oil consumption even by Audi manual standards.

Needless to say, I am not very impressed by Mark Motors so far. I was not made to feel like a "customer" -- more like someone who knew something who was bothering them. When I showed him I documented everything -- he dismissed it as a "yeah, whatever."

I will keep this forum updated with everything that happens in this particular high oil consumption case, as I am sure there are others here in Ottawa. Should be an interesting "ride."

I don't have the same model year as you, but I had my first oil change done a couple of weeks ago (8000kms) and had no visible oil consumption from either the MMI display or the dipstick, both being at the top mark.

I have also never had any oil consumption on my 2 previous 1.8T Passats (2000 and 2004), which were also supposed to consume oil. Synthetic oil in both from day one, changed at every 8000kms.

Is it the way I drive or am I just lucky? I would certainly be concerned at your oil consumption level. I have never quite understood the concept of "normal" high oil consumption.

Good luck, and keep us up to date.

Losing a lot of oil can be due to so many things and should be investigated IMMEDIATELY. Instead of running an "oil consumption test", try just running it like normal and see if there's an oily smell to the exhaust or leaks around the valve cover. Do you get a toxic burnt oil smell in the cabin every now and then? I do from a small leak in the valve cover dripping onto my turbo and going into the ventilation system but it's no biggie. At least I know where the leak is coming from and even with that leak I'm not losing the same amount of oils as you are.

Also, have you checked your coolant to see if it has turned milky???? Find out where this leak is coming from as soon as you can and if you're in Ottawa, take it to TAPP Auto on Cleopatra off Merivale rd. in Nepean. They do excellent work and at a better price than the dealer.

Join the audiottawa group on yahoo. There have been several locals who have had oil consumption issues. They can provide insight into dealing with Mark Motors.

Were you dealing with Bernie by any chance? Call and ask for Lize (sp). She has generally been a good point of contact from what I understand. Depending on who you deal with there you can and WILL get the runaround. Contact Audi Canada and file a complaint if you are not receiving the service you expect.

Tapp is great, I use him all the time. But it sounds like your car is under warranty and you want Audi to deal with this issue NOW. Make a scene if you have too.

I had a 1.8 liter Jetta from new. It was burning oil at the rate of 1.5 liter per 5000km.
At 15000 km it stopped completely. Than at 25,000 km the whole engine blew up with the hole in it.
It was faulty camshaft that was not straight and it would push one valve faster than the others.
It was generating vibration that caused stress on the valves, therefore the oil would find its way through.
I could not detect this.

In time the camshaft became straight, but weakened at the same time and it came apart.
I wish this is not your case, yet I wanted to share.

In the meantime I would recommed using thicker oil like 15W40 that I find ideal. Do not go into 50 grade.
I view Castrol as the best, but everybody disagrees.

Another thing is either you are using 5W30 or 5W20 that I will strongly disagree with, even if dealer recommends it.
In such case you will be burning like crazy.

You have a tough engine but your figures of 1 liter per 1000 km go through the ceiling.

Is your engine built in MEXICO? Mine was.

So i'm due for an oil change, 3 weeks ago i put 0.5 of a liter because i got the low oil light. The light came back on yesterday. I'm hoping it is because i need an oil change and not because i'm going through the low oil consumption. After the oil change i'll see if the low oil light comes back on. Reading these threads does not make me feel comfortable

For sure keep us informed. All the forum members can benefit from what you are experiencing. Any thoughts about going direct to Audi Canada?
