I have a 2003 A4 1.8TQ with 81,000 Km's. When should I be replacing the timing belt?

Also, where can I order a timing belt package with upgraded parts and then just have it installed?

Thanks!

Audi Online Technical Library

Yes, the 2.0T is an interference engine - the pistons will hit the valves if the timing belt breaks.

VAG engines are known for their failing tensioners, rollers, and water pumps; so, I advise that people replace everything in the timing-belt system. It's a small price to pay for insurance against a $5-10K timing-belt snap. I replace all of mine about every 100,000KM. I also advise using a manual tensioner, but that requires a bit of mod'ing, and not everyone will be comfortable doing this.

At 81,000.00 km you do not need to worry yet for the next 35,000.00 km.

Your engine is new.

The thing runs great and it FULLY loaded.
I know that the timing belt will need to be changed soon...my question to you experts is how soon?

Can I wait a few more 1000k?

Thanks
Cheeba just found out that you have an interference engine, meaning that if the belt snaps, the pistons will hit the valves, the valves will destroy you engine head and the camshaft.

I spoke to an Audi tech at the dealership.
he said that Audi changed the timing belt service interval from 115,000 kilometers to 175,000 kilometers on most 2.0T FSI engines because Audi was using better quality belts and didn't see the need to jam the service stations with unnecessary appointments.

However, he said that you are quite safe up to about 145,000 km. after that (even though Audi says its okay) you should replace the timing belt.
Apparently they CAN blow sooner and last month he had seen some that have blown, costing major cash.

I'm definitely replacing mine before 145k. Better safe than sorry

120K should be a good time to do it...i drove my 3.0 to 185K without doing the belt. That was stupid, but didnt have money at the time. did mine a couple of weeks ago on the 1.8t at 120K.

well that's a sigh of relief. I got 115km on my 3.0 & I'm trying to hold off the timing belt for another 5-10 thousand km.

Good info, I've seen the Dealer maintenance card showing 175K kms, I didn't trust that. I'm looking at a 2007 A4 Avant 2.0t with 93K on it, i'm gonna try to use this maintenance requirement as a haggle point.

How are the TSI with the cam followers? I've heard it's been improved since FSI but still requires inspection intervals... i'm liking the traffic and info on your forum here, VwVortex B7 section almost has no traffic.

My old MK4 2.0 8v still looked fine at 155K kms when it was done.

Thinking of possibly going with the kevlar belt when I do it for peace of mind... when you are dropping this much on a car you don't want to have to shell out for a head rebuild after only a couple years.

The age becomes a factor as well. If the car is 8 years old that belt has been exposed to serious elements as well. Timing belt is mostly likely to break in colder temperatures.

but you should be good for 5-10K more for sure.

yeah I would love to wait another 6 months .. will "babying" the car help to save the belts??
