Default RNS-E Nav unit?

Hi

Anyone ever bought one of these?

Audi A4 RNS-E

I've been looking for an ipod interface; they are all about $180. With this, I get that, and GPS (I have a small one I bought via red flag deals for $100, but the cable sucks)...

It apparantly will play MP3 CDs. I wonder about DVDs? Would be nice to have everything all in one unit.

Hey I gave you a call today when I was around D.T. but your phone was off. Sorry I missed ya didnt have too much time to leave a msg.

If you buy the euro spec version of the RNS-E from a guy that I know he can enable the video in motion and a bunch of stuff it costs about $1000 - $1500 USD now I would also look into after market ones as the technology is far better and you get bluetooth integration etc. and they run you less then a $1000, once again got another buddy that can swing you some deals

Np

I have been missing calls like crazy the past week. Not audi related but Fido is going down the tubes. Most of the calls I get goto straight to VM and don't even ring my phones.

Back to the topic ---

Do any of these NAV units have any bluetooth integration? When my phone is working, i wind up yapping on the phone. I noticed on the radio, in one of the menus, there was Phone option (Left or Right or Left and Right) - I presume this isn't related to bluetooth but some way to mute the volume real quick?

Do you know anyone in Calgary with one of these units? Be interesting to poke around at it and see what its like

Ciao
Sean

i have one of these units in my 2008 a4. the nav functions are good, if not great.
but the rest of the menu's are sub par..
i.e the blue tooth integration, which is finicky at the best of times.
if u dont have a supported phone, it will not even sync, (same problem i am having)
2) the ipod interface bites... u have to put the ipod into your glovebox and have no way to see which song is being played as in it doesnt read the ID3 tags. I've heard that they fixed this on the 2009 models, but as yet, no firmware is available for the 2008 models.
lastly, i put in a mp3 dvd and a mp3 cd into the nav dvd player, as it's the only disc based interface i have, and it wouldnt read either. Kept giving me a Disc Read Error. The only way to play mp3's is thru ur ipod or a SD card slot which comes with the unit.

i hope u take all into consideration prior to spending the bucketload of cost for the unit.

cheers
Rudy

I've had the unit in two different cars. The NAV functions are okay, but Garmin is much better. I haven't had any issues with the Bluetooth features, but the car has to be prepped for it and and have it enabled. The button on the head unit takes you to a phone menu that has several phone functions that may or may not work with your phone. Worked for me with a BlackBerry 8830 and an Apple iPhone 3G. The drive in the head unit will play CD's (including MP3 CD's), but not DVD's. It is only capable of reading the DVD-ROM for the NAV function. About the only perk is that the unit reads music on SD cards. If my cars hadn't been spec'd with the unit, I would have gone aftermarket for that kind of money.

I've had the Audi OEM iPod controller in several VW/Audi vehicles. I've also used the Dension iPod adapter in hopes that it would have more display/control features. Unfortunately, only cars with full MMI (A5/S5, newer A6/S6, Q7 etc) capabilities can display song information and give you full control of your iPod and all of it's playlists. Any cars/head units without full MMI are not capable and will give you very limited control. Again, aftermarket would give you way more iPod functionality.

Good luck!

did you sell your RS4? say it ain't so...

also, will the normal stock CD changer play Mp3 cds?

p.s. with respect to RNS-E I think the major problem doing it as a replacemet for a symphony unit is that you lose the CD changer. That'd kinda suck.

otherwise, I'd say go for it. It's awesome

with respect to bluetooth, I think its another few hundred to get that hooked up

the bluetooth works AWESOME in the car...not sure what the other dude was talking about
MP3 cards are excellent...groundbreaking idea there by Audi

new systems are better, but hey...you don't have a new car do you

i.e. new Audi MMI system will have 40 GB hard drive...NAV runs off there, and is even 3D showing buildings a la google cityview or something. There's 10-15 GB dedicated for music on the hard drive, and I believe it's a USB interface.
