Default This much lag cant be right? can it?

Hi everyone,

I got my wife a white 2006 A4 2.0, its a great machine it flatters the driver and is an amazing highway car.

However, my wife has increasingly been complaining about two things and having swapped rides with her for a week to see what she was on about(i thought she was full of it) i have a few questions myself and id like some input from you guys.

1) Lag... OK its a small capacity 2.0 engine with a turbo... i expected that there would be SOME lag and that the tiptronic would mitigate that. For the most part it does, espeically at highway speed its great. I'm not a complete newb to turbo cars, and i know whats to be expected with an aggressive turbo setup etc. HOWEVER: and i am not exagerating here...

From a dead stop, like at a stop sign making a turn, its has lag like you simply wouldn't believe, its like I'm towing a barge. Virtually 0 throttle response... the car rolls forwards VERY sluggishly causing you to feed in more power and then BAM! its like the engine wakes up and the car accelerates violently to the point that in the wet the vehicle will under steer. It's like there is a torque trough a mile deep, like im setting off in 3rd... I know it sounds alarmist but its like no one is home and then you get all this power all at once. A couple of times Ive nearly been clipped because i cant get out into traffic fast enough.

This cant be right... can it?!
i had a VW 1.8t a few years back... and it did NOT do this (it was laggy but not like this...)

2) Excessive lifter noise... the things sounds like a diesel at idle. seriously? wtf? the dealership said its normal due to the special pump used for FSI. i bought that explanation initially... but when you fire it up cold in the AM the car sounds like a box of rocks being kicked down a flight of stairs. I even had a hot oil flush done to see if that would help... it didnt.

this cant be right...can it?

ANY help, any answers, any personal experiences with this stuff, would be great, because I'm taking this back tot he dealership tomorrow and the "that's normal" isn't going to be good enough.

Throttle Body Alignment:
put the key and put it into the position just before the starter turns (do not start the car) push the gas peddle all the way wait 3 seconds and turn the key all the way back but do not take it out, now release the gas peddle and wait 2 minutes! remove key than put it back in and start the car! you should notice a better response while pressing the gas do this once every few weeks!

Try that for the lag.

ticking - check the dip stick for oil level? also in the winter it is NORMAL to hear some ticking, because its freaken freezing outside... after it gets to operating temperature it will sound like heaven.

with the lag - our engines are not made for the advance quattro weight like a jetta that is only fwd = less weight, plus we got a turbo.. it takes over 3100 rpm to spoool....and its not a supercharge where right when u accerate u fly.

I had an oil change done about 1500km ago with no improvement.

Regardless, it appears from these responses and from those i have received from similar inquiries elsewhere that these are just traits of the car that weren't widely disseminated in the motoring press etc. and that we will have to live with it.

I have attempted the throttle body re-alignment procedure and cant really tell you if it made and difference... but i appreciate the responses. Perhaps once the warranty expires ill throw a few bucks at making it a little quicker out of the hole.

All things considered its a solid car and a great drive, very pleased with it. Going in for a 40,000km service tomorrow... its a good dealership but I'm still going to be looking for some answers from them.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, if anyone finds a way to silence or reduce the lifter noise from the FSI pump let me know!

Hi
Also have an 06
It is also noisy and I have heard that it has to do with the injection of fuel
It also had some vibration and the dealer is changing the serpentine belt, not sure how this fits into the fold but it is under warranty so change away
I don't seem to be having the lag problem you describe
But let us know if the dealer comes up with something for you
regards

Being new to turbo charged engines myself, I think I know exactly what you're going through. My first week with the car had me thinking I had made the wrong choice, especially with the 'whip lash effect' of the acceleration when in stop and go traffic.

Couple weeks later I had adjusted my driving, now I don't notice it at all. I find I'm anticipating a little more at the lights, creeping forward a second or two early really helps negate the initial lag of both the transmission and turbo.

In terms of noise...the thing is definitely a rattler. The vibration combined with the heated seats does have a relaxing effect!

Guys, your talking like this is a slow car on take off, I have an '06 A4 2.0T, it's manual not Tip, and taking is a marvel. what you're describing almost feels like the car is taking off in 2nd gear, that I can relate to as i've tried it, and it is dead slow, until the turbo opens up of course, then that marvelous surge of energy comes in.

Also, one question, are these take offs while using the Automatic or Manual part of the TIP trany?

But I would definitely be interested in what the dealer finds...

i have a tip 1.8t 04.. and i have no problems with the acceleration.. u got to think guys.. these cars are not bmw or japanese cars like honda and toyotas.. they dont need turbos.. they go bigger block engines to excel in street speed race.

think guys, rally races.. why there arent any bmws or honda/toyotas in it? cuz they suck.
