Exclamation Re: Importing A4 from US

Just been through it all so here goes:
Insure it thru ICBC or whomever for about 6 to 8 weeks and no regisration is required to transport.
You MUST inform the US border crossing at Blaine by fax at least 72 business hours before crossing of vehicle SN and then check back for clearance - this is easily done by email. Crossing must be done Monday to Friday 9AM to 3PM.
Recall clearance letter is not required at crossing.
Stop at US side and have your vehicle clearance letter stamped by them, proceed to Cnd office and declare your importation. Have proof of vehicle sale price in hand. Pay GST, 6% duty ( for vehicle not made in North America) and RIV fee ($175).
Once you're back, obtain recall clearance letter from Audi and set about getting any required modifications done. This can be very expensive so you should check with Audi to make sure you want to proceed.
Then comes Federal and Provincial inspections. Then licensing is next, at which time you must pay PST.
Alot of hoops to jump thru and all the steps etc. are on the web at:
www.riv.gov.ca
Do your homework and paperwork and be prepared to pay for everything needed.
All in all, it's still worth it!
Good luck.

Sorry, I just read over what I wrote and I made a mistake: the vehicle export worksheet is what must be stamped by US customs at thier border crossing.
Cheers.

OK here goes. Remember this applies to Alberta and might be different in BC. I spoke to my insurance prior to driving the GTi over and they covered me gladly...just asked me to let them know as soon as i had it registered. You need a copy of your title and bill of sale faxed to the border crossing where you will be crossing 72h prior - nothing else. Get the number for the customs office at the crossing point and call them to confirm. You can ask the dealer to fax it over - they usually do. You will fill out form 1 when crossing the border - you take a copy with you and they fax a copy to RIV. You also pay at the spot (RIV fee $209 & Taxes + Duties) You can pay this later but it's not worth the effort....
When back home you need to get a hold of the Recall Clearance letter from Audi. They WANT TO SEE THE TITLE with your name on and will not give the letter prior to that. They can fax it--usually 3-4 business days - sometimes quicker. RIV now needs to send you FORM 2 - you need both FORM 1&2 for the inspection. Do this: When you have the recall clearance letter - call RIV and ask them if you can fax them this valuable piece of German Paper....as soon as RIV has this they actually email you Form 2
take this whole SHEEBANG to your local friendly Canadian Tire and they do the inspection. In alberta they required an OUT OF PROVINCE INSPECTION - you pay for this one (about $200) and not for the Federal (form 1&2) inspection. I got my out of province and federal inspection done all at the same time and could register after that.

I did not pay US tax - you should not have to since your not a US citizen. Riverside Audi had me sign a form stating that and so i paid no tax...

right. the dealers have now been instructed by the manufacturers to not sell new to Canadians. You are welcome to purchase pre-owned. I was looking to buy an 08 A3 but looks like I won't be able to purchase brand new.

It sucks because we know the manufacturers are breaking laws here. There has to be some serious law suits against these guys.

SAME CHAT HERE ON THIS SITE

Honestly, call around dealerships. Money is money. If they don't want to sell you a new car, i would be shocked they all turn you away.

Canadian prices are nuts compared to the US.

I finished importing a 2006 A4 2.0T S-Line from Washington State this week. Process was pretty easy once you get used to paying for a lot of duty (6.1%), cdn taxes (13%), paper processing, etc. Got it from University Audi in Lynnwood as they had a large inventory (about 1.5 hours south of peace arch border crossing).

I negotiated with the US dealer to hook up the DRL's for free. They are used to Canadians so know what paperwork, etc needs to be done. Canadian Tire did the federal (RIV) and provincial inspections - the only mod I had to do were the DRLs.

I figure I saved about $4000 but don't really know as I've had trouble finding a comparable car for sale in Vancouver area.

There was an s-line in the trader, but not an 06 if i recall correctly.

It was expensive and had a ton of KMs.

Do you have any pictures?
