Audi must have changed something from 2006 to 2009 model - or maybe you're just referring to an out of stock situation. I've heard good things of 1010tires.com as well, which I believe is Canadian (site is down now so can't check).
The 16" 3D fit great on my '06 A4 with standard brakes, though there was not a ton of extra clearance for calipers. 17" certainly would have fit, but I understand the narrower tire of a 16 is preferable for winters.
I think any of the suggestions on tires in this thread would work great as they all seem to be solid choices.

I bought a set of Blizzak WS60 from Ottawa Tires Direct - Your #1 place for Winter Tires in Ottawa for my 09 Audi A4 and they were very highly rated on APA.ca (Automobile Protection Association site) Have a look for yourself.

Dunlop Winter Sports are one of the best winter tires, because they are good in snow but also great in dry conditions. And they are V rated, not many winter tires are.
