The 16" 3D fit great on my '06 A4 with standard brakes, though there was not a ton of extra clearance for calipers. 17" certainly would have fit, but I understand the narrower tire of a 16 is preferable for winters.

I think any of the suggestions on tires in this thread would work great as they all seem to be solid choices.
Things changed with the introduction of B8 cars. Bolt pattern remains 5x112, but hub size is now 66.56mm, same as Mercedes. Tire sizes are also different.

I bought a set of Blizzak WS60 from Ottawa Tires Direct - Your #1 place for Winter Tires in Ottawa for my 09 Audi A4 and they were very highly rated on APA.ca (Automobile Protection Association site) Have a look for yourself.

Thanks all......ended up going for Primacy PA3s on 16" aloys.....will post my thoughts in the spring.....cheers and thanks again for the input.

Dunlop Winter Sports are one of the best winter tires, because they are good in snow but also great in dry conditions. And they are V rated, not many winter tires are.
