High Beams not working

High Beams not working
Hi, Looked all through the forum and I can't seem to find any info on this. Thanks in advance for any help.
I just recently purchased an '08 A4 2.0T. I didn't have a chance to drive it at night and just recently found out that the high beams do not come on. The light shows up in the cluster when you push or pull the level but no action on the lights. Also, the fog lights do drop out when you switch on the high beams. It doesn't appear to be the bulbs as they both look good. I'm thinking a relay but I was just wondering if anyone else had this trouble and that it might be something else.

Re: High Beams not working
Halogen or bi-xenon headlights? for bi-xenon, you should hear a click as the internal shutter operates.
If you turn the headlights off completly, does the flash to pass function work?

Re: High Beams not working
Still working on this issue and trying to avoid the stealership. I have a goofy question that I can't seem to find the answer to. There are three bulbs in the headlight. I assume that the ones toward the center are the high beam. The ones in the middle are the DRL and the ones on the outside are the low beam. Please correct me if I am wrong. The reason I ask is as follows.
With the headlight switch turned off, the inside bulbs on both headlights are on. If you pull the high beam lever, the outside bulbs illuminate in addition to the inside bulbs. Now with the headlight switch turned on, the outside bulbs and the center bulbs become illuminated and the high beam lever does nothing.
I purchased this car used and it was imported from the US in September last year. I am trying to get in touch with the previous owner to find out if the wiring was modified but until then I was hoping it might be a simple programming issue. Going to see if a local with a Vag Com can help me out.

Re: High Beams not working
You said you have halogen headlights.
Starting from the outside heading into the middle, your bulbs are combined parking light/turn signal, low beam halogen, high beam halogen. There might also be a small bulb city light in the high beam area.
Your car was imported from the US so some coding changes may have been made. Your high beam bulb should function as the DRL in Canada at a lower intensity than normal. That's what you are seeing when you have the headlight switch off. Next position on the headlight switch is likely Auto which means turn on low beam headlights automatically when it's dark outside. Next position is parking lights only - DRL will be off but city light might be on. Final position is headlights low beam on. To get the high beam you activate the stalk at the wheel. The low beams should stay on and the high beams come on as well.
Since you've been having some problems with the "flash to pass", my suggestion would be to include pictures of your headlight switch position and a pic of the front of the car. Repeat for each position on that switch. Should be pretty easy to see the effect of each switch position. Do it in the garge with reduced light, and you might even be able to determine what bulbs are on right from the drivers seat

Re: High Beams not working
First of all, my headlights are exactly as you describe. From outside in; combined park/turn signal, low beam, city light(tucked in between low and high beam), high beam.
So I went down to see a guy here in Calgary today with a ross tech setup. He found a thrown code stating that the solenoid for the xenon headlights had failed. I don't have xenon headlights so we thought that was odd. He found that the computer was coded for xenon headlights, changed that to halogen and voila things now worked fairly well. Now this is how the headlights worked at that point.
I have a three position switch, there is no auto setting.
In first postion or "O" - Low beam on, city light on, park lights on
In second position or the park light position - city light on, park lights on
In third position or headlights on position - Low beam on, city light on, park lights on
The fog lights were activated by pulling the switch out.
The "stalk" on the column functioned as it should and activated the high beams when pushed in the third position or pulled in any position.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, he made a small change to have the windows go up or down when you press and hold the lock or unlock button on the fob. I think that is a great tweak. I thanked him, and was happy and on my way. I pull up behind an suv and see that my lights work a little different again. This is how they are right now:
In first postion or "O" - Front fog lights on, city light on, park lights on(?)
In second position or the park light position - front fog lights on, city light on, park lights on
In third position or headlights on position - Low beam on, city light on, park lights on, front fog lights off
The fog light switch will activated the fog lights provided you are in the third position. You can't pull it in first position and it has no function in the second position.
The "stalk" on the steering column functions as it should(imo) and activates the high beams when pulled in with the switch in any position. When pushed, it will only activate the high beams in the third position which is correct(imo).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure what happened but it is strange to me that the way the lights funtion would change like that. I like having the fog lights and city lights on as a drl more so than the low or high beam. What I don't like is the park lights on all the time and would rather they only come on when you move the switch to that position. It seems there is no wiring issue and maybe with a little more tweaking I can get them to work properly. My problem is I don't know how they are supposed to work stock which makes it a little difficult. Anyway, long winded but the detail is kind of important I think.

Changes to codes are as follows:
Headlights: Module 9, original code is 00023, new code is 00014. Coding
changes settings from Bi-xenon(USA) to Halogen(Canada).
Windows: Module 46, original code is 11820, new code is 11884. Coding
enables comfort remote ability (Window operation via remote.).
Thanks to TIM$2 for this.

Re: High Beams not working
Some pictures of the way the headlight looks now in the three different posions:
Position One
Position Two
Position Three
Position Three with stalk pushed to activate high beam
Image of switch, freehand drawing with a laptop touchpad is tricky.
