Default Harmonic Crank pulley

Ok, so It would appear at first glance, my Harmonic Crank pulley needs to be replaced.

2006 A4 3.2 Quattro 94,000km

I came home, quickly went inside, and went to go back out, started the car, luckily my dad was there and heard the noise, wasn't nice, upon further inspection it would appear my crank pulley is running off kilt. obviously loose it bent or something.

Car is going on a flatbed tomorrow and to my mechanic's place. I believe the bumper/rap all have to come out to get at this, or more?

This is after I narrowly missed getting a piece of a car through my windshield on the 404 going home this evening. not sure what it was but it still managed to hit my front left corner and scratched it up a bit, hopefully some can get buffed out. The real **** off is that it's the same front corner that I had repainted last year after my girlfriends neighbour backed into my car, killing the fender/headlight/foglight combo.

anyway, does anyone have any thoughts to the harmonic crank pulley? ever worked on it? had it done? Costs? I think retail on a new pulley is $200ish My dad deals parts, mostly bmw/merc but does deal with VW/Audi so hopefully this is done on the weekend. I have to take his B5 now up north :\ prefer my car hands down

The B7/B8 are leagues beyond any previous Audi. Each generation is an evolution of the previous generation, but the differences between the B7/B8 and previous generations is more like a revolution than an evolution.

Sounds like you've had some bad luck with your A4 lately. Hopefully after you get this thing fixed up things should be better. Lots of crazy stuff flying around on the highways as a lot of pick up trucks don't secure their loads. Seen a guy hauling a load of pallets on the back of his truck only to lose half of them in the middle of an intersection. Frikking dumb ***!

I'm not too sure as I have no experience with the 3.2 motor, but I know the bumper does have to come right off. On the 2.0T you have to remove the accessory drive belt and just zip off the crank pulley. However, what really interests me is how it can fail at such an early stage. Both my A4 (100,000km) and A6 (280,000km) have original crank pulleys. How can yours fail? Also, if yours were to fail I'm certain there would be other signs as a crank pulley will affect other components of your engine.

Well I have great news! the harmonic balancer did not need to be replaced! Instead for reasons beyond our knowledge, the screws were all very loose on the Harmonic Balancer.

Two of the screws were out and sitting in my belly cover, and the other 8 or so were all loose!!! so my mechanic got in there with small hands and managed to tighten all screws up again with some loc-tite, which is the normal protocol now. Aparently the torque specs on those screws is very low

so about and Hour of labour is all to be billed for. I managed to get my car back friday afternoon just before leaving in my dads B5, so I switched and went up north a little late, but still before everyone else made it! lol

Using Loctite on fasteners that hold engine pulleys have always been the standard. At least with GM, and we all know their cars aren't nearly as indestructible as ours. Good to hear that you're back up running. I really did wonder how your pulley would've failed at such an early stage in your vehicle's life. Anyhow, good to hear it didn't cost you an arm or a leg and that things are going well. I can only imagine what it would be like to own a silky smooth 3.2 motor, as I have the raucous 2.0T in my A4. FSI and 24V would make it a huge difference from my SMPFI 2.8 30V motor in my A6.

although the loctite has been the standard, I don't know for sure if mine had it on or not before, just that the fix for the screws getting loose was to put on some loctite, the impression I got was that it wasn't on before...but I could be wrong of course!

yeah the 3.2 is a good stock motor, not much in terms of performance upgrades, but I'm cool with that, no place to drive it like hell! has a lot more pick up than my sisters B6 1.8T, and leaps and bounds ahead of my dads b5 1.8T

the 2.0T I've only ever driven in a frontrak model as a loner last year, was ok, but needed the Quattro for sure! it was an A3 as well
