Just purchased a 2008 A4 Avant. It has 3 years remaining on the original warranty and since it was certified by the dealer they added on 2 more years of warranty coverage (got them to give me this for free).

I understand that the oil changes are free while under warranty. Am I correct in assuming that this also applies to the additional 2 years, so free changes for the next 5+ years? I have never owned an Audi before (and I have not picked it up yet so no chance to review manual) so I am unsure.

Oil changes (and other regularly scheduled maintenance) are only "free" if your car was purchased with Audi Care. With Audi Care you are basically paying for all of the maintenance up front at a huge discount. If you plan on doing all of the regular maintenance and expect to keep the car for a few years, it's a great value to you.

If the car was originally purchased with Audi Care it is fully transferable to you. You also have up to the first year/20K kms to purchase it yourself. There is also an Audi Certified Audi Care program offered. Not sure which you would qualify for. Either way, you should contact your dealer to find out if the car was originally purchased with Audi Care and decide what you want to do from there.

Thanks! It was a demo so I doubt Auto Care comes with it, but will check. What is generally covered beyond oil changes and is it worth the cost or am I better off DIY.

From what I understand, the cost of Audi Care is $750 and "covers the manufacturer-required regularly scheduled maintenance services at 25,000 km, 40,000 km, 55,000 km, and 70,000 km, or 5 years from the original vehicle in-service date, whichever comes first." (From audi.ca) The first scheduled maintenance (8,000 km) is supposed to be covered by Audi regardless of Audi Care.

The last two cars I purchased were both consider new cars (less than a year old and under 12,000 km) so Audi Care cost me $750. It was suggested that the total service bills from the Audi Care included service would cost in excess of $2000. Seemed like a good deal to me.

And if by "DIY" you mean do it yourself in your own garage, be careful. If the maintenance isn't performed by an authorized service centre (Audi dealer or other) you may have difficulties if you have a related warranty issue in the future.

Here's a link to a PDF of the 2007 Audi Care Program Maintenance Schedule. I can't see it being any different for a 2008 model.
