Default Buying a VAG-COM

I am looking to turn off the amber in my headlights and wanted a few of the other perks you can do with a cable.
I was just wondering can any of those cables off eBay or dealextreme for 20-30$ work?
What should I be looking for

They can but it seems somewhat hit and miss what combos of cable and VCDS software really work. I have the official Ross-Tech cable, know it works everytime, no hassles. Worth spending the extra IMO. I have helped a number of folks out here in Vancouver with my cable.

http://vagtoolfinder.com/locator.aspx - use this link and find someone in your geography who has a proper cable and can help you.

I tried one from China. It never did work. I did get my money back but had to pay return shipping. Ross Tech has figured out how to change the coding often enough to keep copiers on the outside.
I ended up buying a Ross Tech but haven't used it yet. It hooks up and reads, just haven't had time to implement any changes yet.
Not sure if this helps but that's my experience. Good luck with it.
