Default A4 high pitched whine in reverse -- help.

Hi,

I just got a CPO 2006 A4 2.0T Quattro sedan with manual transmission. I am noticing that occasionally after driving for a bit (at least 15-20 minutes) when I put the car in reverse, I hear a slight high pitched whine or squeak. This happens as I slowly release my foot off the clutch and step on the gas pedal. Once I step on the brake and try to move in reverse again, the sound disappears.

The noise only happens occasionally, and its hard to reproduce; however, it happens enough to drive me nuts. This car is under CPO warranty, but they say it will cost me $150/hour to diagnose. Since its so hard to reproduce I am worried they won't be able to make it happen if I take it in.

Any thoughts of what it might be, and what I should do?

Thanks!

Howdie!
Sie habe eine AUDI!

No reason to worry. This is your clutch adjusting itself.
You have water in your Power Steering Fluid due to either you washed the engine or because of our temperature changes.
Replace your Power steering fluid and your are done with the problem.
Quick fix - go to Canadian Tire get power steering stop leak , pump out what you have in your reservoir and add that fluid to your reservoir. Problem gone.
How are you on your clutch?

PS Take care of it now otherwise you are facing $4,000.00 clutch replacement.

Calgary weather is not for AUDIS. Minus 5 at night and than plus twenty during the day. Imagine all that water in your tank and all the fluids.

WE DO NOT NEED WINTER TIRES DO WE?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply! I am definitely glad to hear its not a serious problem ...

I am the the only driver on the car and I think I am pretty good on the clutch. Having said that, I have had this car for literally under a month. So I am not too sure how the previous owner was on it. It is a CPO car though, so I am assuming the dealership would have inspected anything prior to certifying it.

Questions:

If you are suggesting I put power steering stop leak into it, does that imply that there is a leak somewhere? Is that how you think the water got into it in the first place? As I understand it, the power steering system is a closed system. Also, is this something I should just take to the dealership right away -- since its under warranty. Or should I wait until it happens a bit more often just so I can be sure they'll actually hear it.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for info;
It starts to come together now.
It takes approx 1 to 3 weeks for the fluid to reach the clutch. It will reach the clutch when it wants to and I can not tell when.

Now we have 2 possibilities.

1. Dealer replaced the fluid and now it reached your clutch so it is happy and adjusts itself, or

2. You have water in it from 30 days ago when we had rain and the clutch is not happy about it. Pump out some fluid to clear bottle and see either you have air bubbles. The water comes from faulty cap on top of reservoir or from faulty seals on rack and pinion. It does not leak yet but water can get in. Stop Leak fluid will condition the seals for 3 years to come.

This should happen 2 X Year max. If it is happening more often than it is the air or water in the fluid that causes 2 clutch cylinders to constantly adjust the clutch and they can not do it right. At the end of this process one of them will overheat and explode the rubber hoses, ..yes explode as it will seize first.

( Just in case it happens on the road - put the car into second gear and start it without clutch, it will not let you change the gear but you will be able to drive)

This repair will cost you $4,000.00 and I do not think that stealer covers it since it is maintenance. They will want to replace the clutch plate at the same time when they replace both cylinders.

In case you decide to pump some fluid out, and add Stop Leak you will hear this again, but it will only be once.

I mentioned Canadian Tire because they happened to have a good product this time. It is in Clear bottle and there is like 500 ml of it. It is called "Power Steering Stop Leak - guaranteed to stop leaks". It absorbs moisture so you don't need to replace the whole fluid. You can just use suction tool to remove the top portion of the fluid and add Stop Leak.

I think you should take it to the stealer right away, see what they say.

I would inquire who was the previous owner man or woman. Any car that I bough and was owned by a woman had clutch shot. (I am not a racist or nothing like that, but this is my hard fact).
This happened on my
1976 Rabbit
1981 AUDI 5000 S
1986 AUDI 5000 AVANT
1998 AUDI A4 - this one had 7 bucks under the back seat
Some signs of women driving the car: bounce sheets in the vents, French Vanilla Coffee spills, stereo repaired with nail scissors, CDs stuffed everywhere in orderly fashion, stuff in the trunk like leafs, tree needles, packaging material, ribbons, ropes, fabric samples, kitchen floor and tile samples, spilled liquid stains, floor mats vaccuumed but not washed for years, the top of steering wheel scratched with nails, bottom back of front seats muddy, slippery interior door handles, rear bumber chipped in many places and repaired, tires worn uneven, damaged fuel intake, locks not working properly, coins and tickets in all hard to reach places especially under the back seat, occasional bottle under driver's seat, chocolate stains on the seats, straws, 10cent coins in seat rails, fresh full bottle of leather conditioner, interior parts cleaned with acetone and permanently discoloured, saved receipts excluding credit cards, glove compartment loose and rattling - does not close without effort, parking receipts organized alphabeticaly dating back to 1988.

For the second opinion I would go to Two Square Auto Repair and see Dennis. Tell him that Adam recommended the visit. Two square is certified so your warranty is not affected.

Hi,

Thanks again for your advice, very informative and much appreciated! I spoke to somebody at the dealer and they said to 'keep an eye on it' until its more reproducible. I have a feeling that if I took it in right now they would just charge me $150 and tell me they couldn't find anything.

I am really hoping its possibility #1, and it will just go away as mysteriously as it appeared. Although, today it happened again a few times. This time going when I was going forward at a really slow speed -- 1st gear. If it persists for a few more days I will just bite the bullet and take it in. Very frustrating considering I just got it. If I decided to just replace the power steering fluid as you originally suggested, is this something I could just get done anywhere? Or would you recommend a particular shop?

Also, I found your comments about women drivers and burnt out clutches really funny. However, my girlfriend did not! Hah, funny pics.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond to my post.

Hi
About the women part of it. I do not mean to diminish them. After all I bought from them and they drive on low RPMs so the engine was always good.
My goal was to show you that if you have these signs on the second hand vehicle than you can expect your clutch worn out and therefore everything else about the fluid is null and void.

I am looking for coins now. How much cash is in the vehicle?

PS I am surprised that the moderators did not intervene this time?

What do you think Mike
