Hi Everyone!

I'm new to the site as well as owning an Audi I've purchased my first A4 just in September and now I'm looking to get into the community I've always wanted an A4 and I'm more than happy with the auto i picked up. I ended up with a 6speed black on black A4 with the performance and convenience package (no s-line but it still looks classy

I have a question regarding my gas gauge, i have noticed that when its low and i go to fill up the gas gauge stops at 3/4. It then slowly works its way up to full (takes about 15-20mins) I also notice if that when i turn the car on the next day its at full. I wanted to see is this an issue or a concern i should look into or is this?

Mine did this for a while before the gauge finally died. I ended up having to replace the entire gauge cluster. It was under warranty so I don't know what it costs, but I've heard $1100. If you're gauge is malfunctioning it will throw a code that you can pick up with a scanner.

i have not heard of that myself. maybe something to just give your stealership service department a quick call and see what they say. let us know how you make out as i haven't heard or seen this before. mind you think is my first Audi myself but i have had for 2.5yrs now.

No need to worry at all. All VW do that.
You have 2 gas tanks. The main one and the expansion tank that holds 1 liter.
I take it that you fill up "really well" to make sure that you are on full. You actually overfill and make your expansion tank full as well, and you should not. The gauge shows you that you overfilled. After driving for 10 km all is back to normal, because now your expansion tank is empty as it should be. No harm done.
I do the same sometimes.

No Adam. Most VW gas tanks, with the exception of those equipped with 4motion, are not the same as Audi.
The dealer explained this to me when my gauge died. The gas tank on Quattro fitted Audi's is slightly shaped like an inverted U to accommodate the rear portion of the quattro system. This necessitates two measurement units, one on each side of the tank, to properly calculate how much fuel you're carrying. In some cases a slowly moving gauge can result from a fault in one of the measurement units, but most often the culprit is the instrument cluster. Again, a code will be thrown if one of the sending units is misbehaving.

Thanks for all the info everyone! i did fill up to the point where the pump shut off a few times so i know it was full $65 worth of gas. I called up the dealer and told them what the concern is. The service lady did say that there is a malfunction in the gauge (A very similar explanation as PS7 gave right above)and it could be a calibration or replacement on my A4. i booked a service for Friday morning so i'll see what they actually did and let you all know.

I hope they do not open your gas tank and move and bend the floaters, as it will become worse only, with the smell of gas in the car if they do not do it with care. To seal it properly they would have to drain the gas and dry the tank, and I do not think they would do it, or it will seal ok by luck.
In case it is your instrument cluster than it is definitely worth replacing.

I had this happening on all my VW Jettas and AUDI 5000, AUDI A6 and AUDI A4 so I consider it normal. It tells me if I overfilled or not, so I have the "feel" at the pump.

AUDI A6 is the worst in this respect as it has some expandable rubber lining in the tank, and when I overfill it will spit back probably 2 liters of fuel out the tank.

In reality there could be many things that are casuing this problem, most of which will not be stored in the fault memeory. In fact it could be more than one co-incidently, possibly even the fuel sending unit on it's way out. My recomendation is to monitor the situation and see if it gets worse. It's not abnormal for this type of situation to occur when there is a large temp differential from the gas to the ambient temp. Gas is stored @ 15 degrees C, where as when it's 38 C outside the gas expands and you don't get the issue. Might happen in the dead of winter, where the reverse is true.

Don't go throwing money away at the problem, because there may not be one. Drive it like you stole it and it will be just fine. When the guage cluster quits, then replace it.
