2006 Audi A4 S-line 2.0T , Exhaust Sound
So I don't think I'm alone on this one, i just recently bought an 06 A4 and can not stand the sound of it. Im looking for a deeper rumble but don't really know what to buy, i was looking at exhaust and im not sure which company im gonna go with. Basically what im asking is , from some one that actually owns the product, what mods should i put on my car that will improve the sound and not break the bank.

Sound is obviously highly subjective, so you'll get many different answers - usually people just refer whatever they own as being the 'best'. While it's not going to give you the most accurate experience, I'd start watching video clips of different exhaust setups since it will give you a comparison of one to another. Many of the clips even have a stock car for comparison. You can also head to some car meets and try to find people with aftermarket exhausts.
I'd start by getting a good catback and deleting the rear resonator; then, go to a downpipe if you still want a more aggressive sound. A downpipe and catback also offer significant gains on a 2.0T, and allow you to push a little further with your tuning due to decreased backpressure/EGTs.
Here are some things you can do to change the exhaust tone/loudness:
- Resonator delete/addition
- Catalytic converter delete/addition
- Cat-back
- Headers/Downpipe
- Different turbos

As always, Cheeba knows his s**t.
What kind of exhaust note as you trying to achieve? In my automotive experience I have heard everything from a 400HP 5.7L LT-1 Trans Am to a 380HP 4.9L F12 Testarossa. What you're dealing with is a DOHC multi-valve I4 engine, so don't expect it to sound anything like a silky smooth V6 or a lopey V8.
Also, did you test drive this vehicle thoroughly before the purchase? And what vehicles did you own previously to compare this to before deciding to make the purchase? Finally, you mention that you're looking for an exhaust upgrade that won't exceed your budget. What is your budget? Because Audi parts are always expensive. The really good stuff costs a lot of money, and when you throw in crap then you end up doing the job twice and paying twice which costs even more.

Re: 2006 Audi A4 S-line 2.0T , Exhaust Sound
Thanks for the input so far, @cheeba, @LR Audi and @rock jock 71, i know i wont be able to achieve that ferrari note but im hoping to get rid of this 4 banger 2.0 sound... i did test drive it and the car is fine, my friends all complain about how bad the noise is, and i get what they mean. This is my first car and im only 17 so i wont be able to go over $1000 budget wise. I dont think im going anywhere near a new turbo, ive heard to many bad stories about garages not installing them properly and the car is done. Just a deeper more powerful sound that won't harm my car in anyway would be perfect.

$1,000 is a decent sized budget but with anything else, if you are looking for an upgrade then you have to spend the money wisely. There are many manufacturers. APR, AWE, Stasis, etc. I would stay the f**k away from ECS Tuning though. I wouldn't buy a lock nut from them.
Your vehicle is the 2.0T so the turbo upgrades are surprisingly simple, at least when compared to the 2.7T or 4.2TT. However, they are costly and I wouldn't recommend them unless you really want to S4/RS4 performance.

$1000 you can easily get numerous test pipes, which will change the tone of your exhaust, and give you a little more oomph in the peddle, youtube is your friend for sound clips.
I'm in the same boat as you are wanting a deeper tone but not wanting to spend to much or throw a fart can on her...test pipes are cheap and easily can be removed if you want to upgrade to a full exhaust later...hope that helps since it hasnt been mentioned as an option yet.

@vusum ive looked at test pipes and was ready to order one, except their illegal, Appearntly cops notice them all the time and always hand out tickets. Thanks for the input though. @ LR Audi the note is fine, just it's a 2.0 so it sounds a little soft, I had the car certified at the dealer before I bought it so I think it's all good, I'm looking at the AWE cat back, sounds amazing but still debating if it's worth the price.

My recommendation above all, is decide right now whether you will keep the car over a long term basis or not. If you're not planning on keeping the car for the next 6 years minimum, then you are wasting your time, money and effort. You'd be doing someone else the favour and even lowering your chances of selling your car at a later date with your modifications and upgrades. I've seen it so many times.
If you decide to keep the car, take a worthwhile look at quality upgrades and think of it as an investment. AWE products are high quality and are Audi specific. Stay away from universal garbage as it's a waste to throw on a fantastic car.

also, LR Audi is spot on about what you plan to do with the car. I plan on keeping mine for a while even if I do get a newer one in a few years so I wouldn't mind spending the cash on the upgrades but it does lower your chance of a resale when people see that the car has had performance mods to it.
