Just wonna share my experience , I have 2006 A4, and I drive lot , I bought it new, now believe it or not I put 160,000 km, I went to the dealer to check the cam follower and the cam , expecting that they will tell me you have lots of damage on the cam . the came follower came out like brand new , with very small scratches, and no wear on the cam what so ever, I put a new one anyway because they took the high pressure pump out . so there is no km range for the cam follower as long as you keep your oil change on time and the car been taking car off you should be ok, however it is not gonna heart checking the cam follower once a while. Thanks

If camshaft is good, 2 hours job max (depends which shop $150 - 250) plus part, mean camsfat follower (100$) that's all.
If u camshaft need to be replace then u bill gonna be much higher.

The engine oil you use makes a big difference in cam follower wear.

H2 Sport in georgetown, ontario makes a roller cam for the 2.0T FSI engines. I don't remember what the price was but it seems to be a lifetime solution for a few golf GTIs out in that area. As soon as my warranty runs out, i'm getting me one of those.

I have a 2007 Audi A4 2.0T Frontrak @ 92,000 km.

The engine light came on close to the end of the 4 year warranty period and I had it checked at the dealership (Mississauga). They said the engine light coming on was due to a faulty fuel sensor and replaced it. Three months later, the engine light came back on and there was a noticeable drop in power. The engine light turned on when I was entering the on-ramp to the 401 Hwy.

I brought the car into the Audi/Volkswagen dealership in Kingston. They said there was damage to the fuel pump, cam shaft, and follower. The repairs would cost $2031.04 + tax.

The car was repaired and tested by the mechanics. During the short drive around the block, the engine failed. They contacted Audi Canada who replaced the engine. The car was repaired over the next 3 weeks and returned with a bill for the fuel pump and wheel alignment. Audi Canada paid for the new engine and installation (the dealership charged for the alignment - I suspect they tried to recoup some of their labour costs of this car).

I suspect the cam follower is the culprit behind the damages to the engine. Unfortunately, the dealership does not test the oil after each change for metal fragments from the follower. There is no way for the average person to knowing and prevent this part from causing engine failure.

My opinion is that this follower is a design flaw of this engine and needs a better solution than paying to get it replaced at regular intervals. I appreciate the efforts of the dealerships and Audi Canada to repair the car. I expect more from a car that costs $40,000.

You guys scared me... I just bought a used 2006 A4, 2.0T with 114k on it, now I'm at 119k. When I bought it the garage that checks the car for the used car dealership from which I bought it said they did check the cam and the cam follower (I made sure to have them check it before I buy it) and they gave me a report that it was fine.

All these stories make me want to go and double check it at another garage just to make sure...think it's worth it?

I also heard some stories that this issue is covered under warranty in the States..

To everyone with A4 cam follower issues, if you are within your warranty go to the dealer and have your cam follower and TCM replaced, these are costly repairs and they never inform anyone about it.
There might be other upgrades for your vehicle, ask to see a TSB print out, they keep that info from us until your out of warranty, then tell you upgrades are needed and you have to pay for it. don't be fooled, look at the USA forum, we are being robbed by Audi Dealers in Canada.

Cam Follower should be replaced and Make sure you get your TCM replaced within the warranty period, you'll regret if you don't.
PLEASE READ ABOUT THESE VEHICLES BEFORE PURCHASE, IF YOU ALREADY OWN ONE, LOOK AT THE ADVISORIES, YOU MIGHT HAVE TO SPEND MORE THAN THE VALUE OF THE CAR TO REPAIR JUST THE TRANSMISSION. BE GUIDED, I'M HAVING GREAT REGRETS!

Here's my opinion....

if you own B6 & B7 (and any other model that uses this crappy design) you absolutely MUST CHECK the cam follower on a regular basis! it's easy to do and takes 30 mins.

It doesn't matter how much you change the oil
what kind of oil you use
old style cam or new style
or how much you wax your car....

The cam follower is unpredictable and will wear. I changed my oil very often. For the first 100,000K i did it every 7,500km, not 15,000 which is recommended. My cam follower wore though and actually broke! see below. This happened at about 200,000 kms. I changed the original cam follower at about 100,000kms - it was just worn, not worn through.

consider yourself warned.....

FYI - I didn't bother to change the intake cam when this happened. said forget it...just changed fuel pump and replaced follower. I now check and replace the follower every 45,000kms. Car runs great.

I have a 2008 A4, now with 280,000 kms.
