When to change timing belt on used A4?
Just picked up a 2006 A4 2.0T Quattro with 101000km on it.
The thing runs great and it FULLY loaded.
I know that the timing belt will need to be changed soon...my question to you experts is how soon?
Can I wait a few more 1000k?

Audi recommends that it be done by 115k. Keep in mind that the rubber wears slightly faster in really cold climates, I'd do it at 110 to be safe. Follow the link below for other maintenance questions.

Actually I am pretty sure the 2.0T needs the timing belt changed before 175k (or 110m). I just picked up a 2006 2.0T as well w/ 75k on it and will probably not even think about changing it until 120-130k...

Change it now.
You never know what happened to this car before. If it had oil or antifreeze on the belt, it wore out way faster. Make no mistake about it. If it snaps your engine is gone. You do not need the risk.
You can check it for cracks and wear by removing the top of the front cover. It can not be shiny or have sharp edges.
There is more stress on it during winter.
I think on 2.0 engine the pistons can not hit the valves, but if they do....?
There are 2 kinds available, one is cheap rubber, and they also have kevlar. Insist on Kevlar as it is way better.
I change it every 120,000 km.
Once they perform the work they will check for leaks in your antifreeze pump as well as you are nearing the time to replace the seals there as well.

I agree, better to change sooner than later, my only point was that 'technically' these should last 175k on a 2.0T engine...

175 ? Probably if you live in Florida and not with the turbo.I do not accept this notion at all. They make them the way that they skip teeth prior to breaking - sometimes.

Timing belt is not all. There is also the tensioner. Once the tensioner quits your car's life expectancy is at 100 KM. (not thousands)
We do not know what is the condition of both parts at this time. You can always ask a mechanic to take a look at your timing belt and they would know what to do.
Timing belt replacement is expensive as they want to replace pump, seals and tensioner at the same time. I think it is like $2000.00.

Just out of curiosity I called the dealer and an indy shop here in Edmonton. Both recommended changing the timing belt before120,000 km for the 2.0T. My timing belt tensioner started squealing around 74,000 km and I had to have it replaced (under warranty). Stuff just doesn't last as long in the cold.
