I'm guessing it's a seized bushing in the linkage. That's the problem I had and have seen it a lot. Did they slow down and eventually stop or just stop?

Agreed with mpimm. If the fuses check OK and motor tests good then a likely possibility is a seized wiper transmission at one or both of the wiper arm pivots. Sometimes they can be disassembled, cleaned and lubed and sometimes the transmission needs to be replaced. This can happen on almost any car and is not necessarily a fault of the B6 platform.

I had the same thing happen to me. Turned out to be the Wiper Motor Transmission (whatever that is) and yes, it was $400 to repair.

I have a love hate relationship with my Audi. Good looking, but she's a high maintenance bitch. LOL
