I bought my 2003 A4 Avant used, so it came with just one key fob (and the valet key). I bought the remote key fob part used online and a brand-new key head from the dealership, and put them together; it worked (I had to match the model number, the FCC ID, and the frequency to that of my old remote). Then, the dealership programmed all three keys to the car.

1. The first weird thing is that both keys show up as "driver 1" on the dashboard LCD panel. I was under the impression that one should be 1 and the other should be 2, and they both recall their HVAC etc. settings, but the numbers are the same. The manual says nothing about this.
2. The second weird thing is that I programmed both keys to seat memory buttons 1 and 2—one seat etc. position for me and one for my fiancée, so that, when I open the door, the driver's seat slides into position. Now, my fiancée's seat position recalls correctly, but mine (what my friends term a "gangsta lean"—really, it's not that bad, though) always tilts forward a bit more than I programmed it to. This is extremely annoying, because now, every time I get in the car, I effectively have to adjust the seat back...which defeats the purpose of the entire exercise. Now, I understand that this is probably some sort of by-design safety feature (perhaps Audi doesn't want me leaning too far back?), but it is unacceptable to me. Is it possible to dissociate my key from the seat memory position? I have no idea how to do this.

This is what I did to associate the keys to the seat memory buttons in the first place:

1. Press and hold down the memory button number.
2. While keeping the button pressed down, press and hold down the unlock button of the remote.
3. Wait for 2-3 seconds, keeping both buttons pressed down, then let go of both buttons.

How do I undo this for my key?

From my A4 manual.
To cancel a seat position assigned to a key:-
Hold the MEMO button and within TEN seconds press the unlock button on the remote control key
Release the MEMO button after TWO seconds

To assign a seat position to a key:-
Press the memory button of the seat position you wish to assign to your key
Hold down the memory button and within TEN seconds press the unlock button on your remote control key
Release both buttons after TWO seconds. Now that seat position has been assigned to that remote key.

Each time you assign a seat position to a key, you cancel the seat position which had been assigned to that key before.

Also never seen the Driver 1 / Driver 2 info you talk about in the panel; sure you are not confusing that with the trip computer display that does show a 1 or a 2 meaning the short term and long term computer options, depending on pressing the reset button on the underneath side of the wiper stalk.

As for the 1/2 in the panel...how exactly does it work and what do the two numbers mean, then?

1 and 2 are the two modes of the trip computer.

Both are functional all the time. Mode 1 resets to 0 if the car is turned off for more than 2 hours. It lets you record mpg/time/distance for individual shorter trips. For example I use it to see how long it's taking me to drive up to Whistler, BC.

Mode 2 maintains info until you reset it manually. It's often used to measure how far you travel on a single tank of gas i.e. zero when filling the tank and read values when you go to refill the tank again.

Press the button on the bottom of the wiper stalk and you will move between modes.
