Washer jet issues

Washer jet issues
Hello all,
Just bought a '02 A4 Quattro 1.8T last week and discovered today that neither the windshield jets or the headlight jets are working. I took the tank out and checked both pumps and they run when 12vdc applied externally. 12vdc at the fuse so I am thinking it's the switch. All other functions of the switch work but just no jets.
I'm wondering if there's a trick to replacing the switch and if there are any ideas out there as to the problem?
Thanks for any replies,
Ron

Re: Washer jet issues
I managed to figure out the washer jet issue. The fuse for the "intelligent control module" was blown. Fuse #37. I didn't know washer jets needed an intelligent control module to spray liquid. Seems like overkill to me!

Re: Washer jet issues
Did the Fuse replacement fix both your windshield washer jets as well as your headlight washers?
I have yet to see my headlight washers work, if I even have them. The windshield washers work fine.
I read in the owners manual that the headlight washers only come with the Xenon light package, and since I do not have Xenon headlights is it safe to assume I do not have the washer jets in my bumper? I do have the square plastic cutouts there, and when looking along the hood latch front grill area, I can see the washer fluid hose running actoss the front of the car.
Any insight into this would be appreciated,

Re: Washer jet issues
I have yet to see them activate, and i drive in the dark every morning and night to and from work. In this weather as you can imagine, I use the washer fluid quite often to clean off the roadspray.
I'll have to do some digging in the fuse box and see if all fuses are in good shape.
Just found this video, right after I was asking for a picture or video of it in action......

Re: Washer jet issues
It is very tough to see headlight spray while sitting in driver's seat. There is a definite delay when activating washers. On mine, seems like 1.5-2 seconds before headlight washers activate. If you just pull the trigger a bit, say for only 1-1.5 seconds for a reasonable windshield clean with minimal washer usage, the headlight spray likely won't have enough time to release. Best is to have someone sit in car, with headlights on, and then ask them to use washers for a few seconds at least and then you'll see spray nozzles pop up and spray, hopefully. If not, you may have a leak in the headlight system, as a leak causes loss of pressure and it's the pressure that makes the nozzles pop up, I think. Nozzles may also be connected to a solenoid switch which is activated by washer control, not sure. I forgot now what my mechanic told me when he fixed mine about 5 years ago.

Yeah, I had the same questions about mine - I tried to see them work by holding the spray and then checking to see if the headlights even had some fluid on them... nothing.
I want to peek behind the bumper first and verify - but my understanding is they are there.

Re: Washer jet issues
They do break. Think mine was a faulty solenoid valve that trips when headlights are on and washers are activated. Cost about $100 for part about 4 or 5 years ago. Another time I had a leak and all my washer fluid leaked out at the headlight nozzles, so another repair. Don't remember how much that one was, but not too much. Hey after 250,000km I've had a lot of repairs. Sometimes it's second time around for some repairs.

Re: Washer jet issues
If you have washed you car and it happens to freeze before all the water is out of the headlight washer spray head you will blow the washer pump fuse. The headlight pump will overload trying to build enough pressure to force the heads out and pop the fuse. Keep a couple in the glove box. 30 Amp. Sucks when it happens at night in the middle of nowhere rural Quebec on your way home from the moutains. Ask me how I know.
