Smile Wanting advice on buying A4 1.8Tq

Hi Everyone,

I'm finally able to buy the car I've wanted for a long time, an A4. I'm drawn to the 1.8T Quattro with the 6 speed, although these seem hard to find. I'd like to stick with an 04 or newer, although buying a brand new one is out of the budget unfortunately.

After searching google and this forum I've heard about the "sludge" issue and people having issues with the timing belts\water pumps as well as suspension bits like CVs and tie rod ends\bearings etc. Can anyone think of anything else to look for\be aware of?

Are there certain options that are more sought after\desireable?

Any model years to seek out\avoid?

Also, I love on Vancouver Island and cars are way overpriced so will most likely be buying something out of Vancouver area or maybe even Kelowna\Kamloops. I'd really appreciate any info on good, bad, or ugly dealerships in those areas.

I'm also open to any suggestions on mild tuning or upgrades to perform right away. I'm definately gonna upgrade the ECU, and possibly rims\tires.

Thanks for your input guys and girls!

be carefull of the gearbox bearings whining it sounds very like the cluch release bearing but stays all the time when moving it was showing worse at around 60mph , i had the 18t 190 it was a 2004 plate, ended up changing them at 40,000 and at a cost of £700 and was worth the money, apart from that these cars are bullet proof and i loved mine.

good luck with your hunt

Talking Re: Wanting advice on buying A4 1.8Tq

Just bought a 2004 A4 1.8T Quattro 6 speed with 130,000 kms on it. Black with grey leather interior. 18' BBS rims and a full service history that checks out pretty good. Had to drive almost 4 hours plus a 2 hour ferry ride each way to get it but I love it! Here are a couple pics...

What do you guys think?

I know the kms are a bit higher than I wanted but it still has 30,000kms\1 year of Audi Certified warranty left on it. Once that warranty runs out it will be time to modify I think!

So dropping in an ECU and bypass valve etc won't mess up the factory warranty?

Oh, and I'm guessing the BBS rims were a factory option or are they aftermarket? Noob question I'm sure but I've seen a few with those rims already.

I reaaaaaally want to eliminate some of that turbo lag and push the HP up, but first it's time to do an oil change and just get used to the car a bit.

I bought some Mobil 1 synthetic 5W 40... good oil? Anybody running this oil in their A4? It was expensive and I haven't cracked it open yet so if it's not worth it I'll return it.

Loving the car so far!

mobil 1 is good stuff.

You have a b6 audi a4 so chipping does not involve a physical chip. It's done by loading the software into your ecu. Most comes with a stock mode that you can turn back to when getting works done at dealership. After that you can just turn it back on to the chipped mode.

There are a few chips for your a4 out there, most people run revo or apr cause they are the easiest to get a hold of. Not too sure about the island but vancouver check out rpiequipped, pgperformance, and kineticmotorsport.

Just checked out the APR website and read some threads on this site... Stage 1+ looks like the direction I want to go. Anybody have experience with that setup?

Also as I am on the island and there is no APR dealer on the island can some-one recommend (from personal experience) a shop in Vancouver?
