Top up engine oil?

Top up engine oil?
Is one allowed to top up engine oil in 2003 Audi A4 1.8? I just got this car and the oil on the dip stick registering very low. I also purchased a litre of Castrol Synthetic oil 5w-30. The previous owner said to wait for another 2,000 kms before oil change. I am not sure whether I should drive with low oil.
Presently the car displays OK after checking the coolant and the oil when you press the service button on the dash. Please advise.

Yes its alright to top up but its a good idea to use the same brand and more importantly the same wieght of oil. You should be using 5w40 unless the previuos owner used 5w30.
