take it to the dealer the temp sensor is under and extended warrenty 10 years or 160000k
mine went on my 02 a4 all taken care of parts and labour
the extended warrenty is something to do with the emissions control

i have the letter from audi had mine done at 145k i can dig it out if you get any issues from them
i am 99% sure it is for all engines mine was the 3.0 v6 so that could be the only issue let me know if you need any more info. yeah on mine the temp sensor is a big part of the emissons
control.

Mine started acting crazy and I had it replaced by OpenRoad under recall campaign. Everything was OK during summer time, but this season my coolant T would go down to 60-70 when going downhill. The culprit: Thermostat. I changed mine by myself, bought the thermostat (~$25) and coolant (23/gallon) at VM Autohaus in Burnaby. Took me about 2-3 hrs but I took my time. Mechanic should charge you 1-1.5hr, I guess. Not sure about 2004 A4, but for AWM engine this is what it takes:

If you need a thermostat I have one and will sell it to you for $120. It has never been used and still in box. I also have a OEM coolant temp sensor I can sell you both for $150.00 I didn't need the parts.
