Hey...it's my first time looking into lowering my Audi A4. I'm just curious if all i need to replace is just the springs or the springs and coilovers? I found a website but this site says I need to have 5 posts before I can show you? I'm also getting my car repainted this wednesday so ill have to wait a bit on buying them.

You can usea spring kit like the Eibach Pro Kit over your existing struts, but I've heard that they will prematurely wear out your struts. However, I put the Eibach Pro Kit on my old 04 Subaru WRX (with the stock struts). I drove it that way for around 60K's before I got rid of the car. Mind you the car was brand new when I put in the springs.
Depending on your budget, the best solution is a coil over kit. But I think you can get away with just a spring kit with your existing struts.

Shocks (or struts) plus springs need to be matched to have proper handling and ride (as well as shocks to last a decent amount of time). There are several known "matches" that will work well (try searching). Along with proper matching, coilovers provide adjustability and typically provide a higher level of performance as well as ride (if you're prepared to spend some $$'s). I had the Stasis SS coils and they were very smooth but didnt provide much performance improvement over OEM sprot suspension in my 2004 A4. I then went to a set of Vogtland GT coilovers (Startup Racing) and ended up with far better handling without a bone jarring ride.

Well springs will destroy your shocks altogether, they are not designed to preform at hights that aftermarket lowering springs. AND it will reduce the handling. I would buy lowering kit. Coilovers were designed originally for racing as they are adjustable according to the condition. So alot of it is money wasted for a rugualr street driver. But if you can get a good deal on the coilovers, go forit.

done it both ways on various vehicles, do it right the first time to save you headaches down road. if that means you have to wait until next season, then so be it. also be prepared to replace upper and/or lower control arms when you do the switch, i needed all 4 uppers which was an un-estimated cost.
that being said, im running Blisteen PSS9 coilovers and i love them. you get used to the ride (even on calgary roads) and it is very tight.

Alright thanks for the tips. I'm just still curious though.....what is the coilovers for and the springs, whats the difference? If I get the coilovers I wont need the springs? There is a kit on ECS Tunning for 150. Is that what normal cost is about? I also notice a piece of metal about half an inch away from my tire, is that the upper control arm? Thanks for the help once again.

springs are just springs, coilovers are pretty musch full suspension. It has springs, strut shocks and so on. So it will replace pretty much your entire suspension, hense its so pricey. And im not sure waht you talking about but the metal thing could be the adjuster, with coilovers you can adjust hight and such of the suspension.

i'll try taking a picture when i get my car back from paint, which should be tonight sometime he said. The piece of metal is honestly half a inch from the tire. If I were to get 18s on there it would cut it up. I would need a spacer or something like that...once I get the picture I'll let you decide.

Alright sounds good. Will I have to change the screws were the lug nuts go on if u use spacers? On my VW Passat the mechanic told me it needed them for my other rims. Ummm but yeah heres a picture I took of the part that might be in the way. snapplr.com/b9nc
