I have a 03 3.0

I bought it with just under 50k

I now have 130k

no real problems to think of... just had my starter replaced out of warrenty...& my struts.... other then that knock on wood not much else....I still need to get my coils replaced which had the recall.. I recently got a letter from audi saying that I still have not had them replaced... I will go soon to get it done...
also still on my original timing belt which I have been putting off....

I'm a bit late to the game, posting now. But I purchased my 2003 Audi A4 B6 1.8T turbo in March of 2014 at 173k miles. It was GREAT at first. The first summer I drove it, the only hint of a problem was that the a/c wasn't quite cold. It was cool-ish, but not what I'm used to in regards to car a/cs. But whatever, it wasn't an especially hot summer anyway and I barely used the air conditioning.

And then the winter happened. The first issue was the license plate light. The warning light came on, okay, no big deal. Except when I went to swap them out, the license plate light housing was completely corroded to the point of crumbling when I began unscrewing the screws. Schwoops. My husband happens to be an autobody tech, and there were several Audis in the shop at the time, a couple of which were being scrapped out for parts, so hubby ninja'd the light housing to swap out with my corroded one. However, before I could swap them out, one of the bulbs was magically working again! Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. The pattern remains a mystery. This, I've since learned, would become a very familiar theme in all of my car's problems relating to the electrical system.

Next was the headlights, then the taillights/brakes/rear blinkers. Took a minute to learn which bulb goes where, since there are, what, five bulbs in each taillight casing. But the brake warning light never *quite* goes off completely, and the license plate warning light is constantly on, because one of the two bulbs is apparently on sometimes (?), but the other is out...usually.

I replaced all four tires in early February. This was the point where things got REAL, and not in a good way. Something had happened toward the end of the fall where my exhaust suddenly became quite loud. When I had a thorough check of all systems in February, it turned out the flexpipe had a gaping hole and needed repaired immediately. Took it to the only remaining shop in my area that still welds flexpipes, but it was too far gone to weld back together. The flexpipe was replaced for $100, which was cheaper than the weld job would've been. 👍 Butttt....the coolant system had some major issues, and all said and done, I spent $1200 alone to replace the coolant system hosing, which didn't actually fix the problem. It was leaking, badly, but my Audi guy couldn't figure out from where. I finally found the leak, and determined that it only occurs at a specific temperature range (at or below 25℉). The leak was then fixed - it was very near the engine (coolant intake valve?) in a pipe and I identified it by the crusty neon green buildup that liquified and sprayed everywhere upon the engine heating. No problems with that since. We'll see how it does next winter.

The wiper fluid reservoir seemed to hold about 1/4 the normal level of fluid, and I found that leaking out from near the left front headlight. It was then explained to me that the headlight washers had massive leaks and in order to fix the wiper fluid issues to the windshield, I'd have to have the entire system repaired. I said f it, it still sprays somewhat and wiper fluid is cheap and this wasn't a priority. The wiper motor was also jacked up, and my mechanic managed to weld a magic fix onto that, so the cost was very low.

This past winter was pretty epic cold here in northeast Ohio, and the temps dropped below -15℉/-20℉ multiple times. As a result, the belly pan filled with giant ice chunks that eventually broke off the pushpins holding the frontmost part onto the car. After climbing underneath my car in the freezing cold, wearing medical scrubs or dress clothes wayyyy too many times to count, sometimes using my feet to reattach it, and trying to rip the thing off myself, I had my mechanic kindly add it to his pile of belly pans in the corner of his shop that were causing similar problems for other customers. No more issues there! 😂

But then late June happen (a week a half ago) when I received an unexpected call that a very good friend had been killed in a car accident. I needed to make a 700-mile trip to South Carolina for his funeral with no time to prep the car and very limited funds. About halfway there, my oil light came on. Okay, it's close to 100℉, I'm riding on cruise control on the highway (which seems to make this problem worse,) and I know it's time for an oil change. I add a quart (my dipstick is so broken that I can't pull it out to check the oil, thanks to the cheap plastic manufacture of it.) I continue, and the car reeks of burning oil, there's oil buildup coating the entire tail end of my car, and the oil light is back on about every two hours. I went through 10 quarts of Royal Purple 5w-30 just getting it there. The trip back, I left at night so the temperature would be lower (as if this somehow would help) and all was well until the 350 mile point. Oil light, sudden intense smell of burnt oil. My funds were severely limited by now, and I was concerned about having enough for gas to get it home, so I could not afford to dish out $80 on another 10 quarts of oil. I bought a quart and hoped for the best, though it wasn't my usual brand - some isolated gas station in nowhereville, Virginia, and I was just glad to see they had one kind of full synthetic. 30 miles later, oil light is back on. This time, I'm in the mountains of southern West Virginia with 30+ miles to the next town - which probably doesn't have an auto parts store. The gas station there has no full-synthetic, but a local mechanic happened to be there and sent me to a Wal-Mart a few miles away for oil. I could not afford any of it. I needed to make some hard choices, so I let my 9-year-old help me logic my way through what to do. We settled on a $3 bottle of leak-stop and two quarts of the cheapest synthetic blend (yiiikes) available. The car stunk to high hell and shook and sputtered fiercely, but we forged on. The oil light did not come back on that trip, and we did make it home, where I promptly added 3 quarts of Royal Purple, while apologizing profusely to my poor engine. The day after getting home, the check engine light came on. The shaking is less, but still present. Oil light came on twice today. Car is scheduled to go in next week for maintenance/repairs/oil change. I'm NOT excited about what I'll hear back.

The minor and internal problems are the peeling rubberized paint, two windows that are off track (regulator's fine, and not driver's side window. Passenger front *sometimes* works perfectly, sometimes not at all.) A few small spots of rust on hood as well as one fairly good sized one on passenger rear door. Otherwise, all good.

I love this car. It brings the joy back to driving for me, and it never DOESN'T run. It's dependable, but pricey! And some of the attempts Audi made at lessening the weight of the car (plastic piping, aluminum screws instead of steel, etc) only cost the consumers out the a$$ in the long run, and we never needed a raceworthy sedan - we needed a functional one. I plan on buying another Audi again, once I finish grad school. In the meantime, I'll likely keep forking out mad loot to the mechanic for repairs or this oil thing will destroy it. Either way, I couldn't imagine myself buying a domestic car again.

Curious. The coolant should be Pink in colour, not green. VW/Audi specifies G-12/13 coolant and neither should be green. If your coolant system is leak free now, you should have it fluched and filled with the proper stuff diluted 50/50 with distilled water. The OE coolant from Audi is only around CAD$27 and a jug of distilled water from a pharmacy is about CAD$2.

I feel for the OP and the problems with his car, though it seems like there was a lack of proper maintenance from the previous owner. That, and the fact it was a tiptronic which is, unfortunately, not a reliable piece of machinery though the FWD CVT is notorious for numerous failures and problems, hence the most reliable B6 are the ones equipped with the manual transmissions.

I bought mine in the summer of 2012 after ditching my tired Gen 5 Accord. I've visited many dealers and seen many VW Passats, Jettas, Audis before I found my car from a private seller locally. He was the 2nd owner and he was very upfront about some problems with the car.

I really wanted an '04 A4 and newer because of the 6-spd vs my 5-spd but I only bought it because he had a folder of the history about an inch and half thick so I knew it came from a good home. I did my homework.

Sure, I had to repair the known issues like the leaking power steering rack and smaller items but it always started and ran and other than regular maintenance, I couldn't be more happier with my car. There's a feeling of rock-like stability and maneuverability that cannot be matched by an other except from others from Germany.

I recently drove from Toronto to Southern New Brunswick non-stop and back and it was the first time I had done such a long trip. On the way back, I encountered severe (typical of southern Ontario) rainstorms for the last 3 hours of my journey and I have never felt safer in any other car than in my B6. I'm more enamored with my car now than before and never had a doubt it can haul *** for 3000km without blinking. The gas mileage was excellent as well, averaging around 7.4L/100km (hand calculated - not trip computer) doing a steady 120 to 130 km/h there and back. And this is after I did a Stage 1 Eurodyne ECU flash just 2 weeks prior (30hp & 35ft/lbs more). Love it!!!

The only thing it needs now is a set summer tires, motor / snub mounts (on order from ECS Tuning) and a small leak in my resonator pipes. I may go aftermarket with two separate resonators because I'm not a fan of loud exhausts (too much droning on the highways).

My car doesn't go through any oil or other fluids and there are no unwanted noises (though I wish it had more noise deadening for high speed runs).

In short, these are solid and reliable cars if they're properly taken car of, IMHO.

BTW, I've always used independent shops or worked on my car myself and have never had the 'Stealerships' touch my car. And because these cars are more complicated and harder to work on than the average automobile, I always insist on genuine VW/AUdi parts for my car, or equivalent replacements from reputable manufacturers for reliability so you only have to do the work once and not multiple times if the parts are shoddy.

I've got around 205,000Km and intend to go another 100,000 + more.

Regarding the green coolant, that is a thing my import auto mechanic does. I do not take it to a domestic auto mechanic, but there was one incident when I first bought it that I talked to the guys at Valvoline about how competent they were to do an oil change on it for me. Them foaming at the mouth to get their hands on an Audi should've been my first warning. In the process, they *almost* put the wrong oil in, they popped off the radiator hose (coolant EVERYYYYWHERE,) and the following day, the radiator hose blew off again, smoke and the whole nine yards. I was not impressed, and Valvoline made what may have been their first ever "house call" out to the location I was stranded at and replaced the coolant hose clamp with a metal one (the factory clamp was a plastic piece of $hit.) Since then, I've only taken it to my import mechanic. But that was also the beginning of the more serious coolant system issues. It was going through about 3 gallon jugs of coolant a week, so mechanic was actually supplying me with the coolant until he could figure out what the problem was.

Turns out the coolant situation is not, in fact, fixed. I pulled the reservoir and found a leak on the very bottom, about the shape of a flathead screwdriver (bizarre) and patched it with epoxy resin and fiberglass til I can replace the reservoir. It seemed to work perfectly for about a week, then the coolant light is back on. It holds the coolant better, but when I start the car sometimes, the coolant almost all drains out suddenly onto the driveway. 😖 Patch is still in place, I think something (pressure issues?) is causing the coolant to escape via the emergency overflow drain. I'm about over this coolant system crap.

I changed the oil myself after having used the garbage synthetic blend and leak stop. New filter and Royal Purple only. Replaced the shattered dipstick tube and all seems well with the oil now.

Also replaced the license plate light housing and both lights work now.

I'll do the G12 coolant once I know for sure the coolant system is fixed. Which is probably never going to happen, by the looks of things.

Had the codes read the other day.
-Random multiple cylinder misfire (cylinders 1, 2, 3, 4)
-Bank 1 too lean

Oh yay.

Have you had a coolant pressure test? It would an obvious test if the leak is not very obvious. Takes less than a half hour.

I should be receiving my engine mounts today. Can't wait to swap them out tomorrow

Oh yes, multiple times. At one point, I stood under the car on the lift while 16 pounds of pressure was being applied to the coolant system. Not a drip. It's temperature-related, somehow. When it sits and cools overnight, then I start it up in the warm daytime, it mass ejects all the coolant. 😵

I'm going to unplug the MAF today and see if that's not causing the cylinder codes. Maybe will hunt down a new air filter also. Or find a replacement for my full-size spare, which is currently in use as right front tire.

Ooh, have fun playing with those mounts!

Hmm. How are your engine mounts BTW? This may be a long shot but my 1.8T came with hydraulic mounts which the rubber eventually ages and the (purple-ish) fluid leaks out.

I did an oil change a couple weeks ago and found out that my mounts are leaking which is why I have mounts on order (they just arrived BTW). For me, the tell-tale sign was that my front snub mount is resting on the bottom of the bracket with the engine shut off.

The reason I'm telling you this is for the last two years since I changed my thermostat, J-plug and flush and filled the cooling system, I've been noticing a coolant smell from under the hood after almost every drive. Some days are stronger smelling than others. I have also pressure tested the system and found no leaks and my reservoir has never shown any indication of coolant leaking out. It drove me batty not being able to find a leak and with no coolant loss.

Then I was reading a forum regarding motor mounts and someone suggest that excessive engine movement may be putting stresses on the plumbing hoses and flanges. Since my MM's are shot anyways, I decided to change them and the snubbie to also handle the extra power I gained by doing a Stage 1 ECU flash recently.

Changing the MM's may not help my coolant smell but it won't hurt in keeping the engine flex down.

UPDATE

I've found my coolant smell and it was my water pump. I pressure tested it and a few drops of coolant was leaking from the bottom of the engine block just behind the crank pulley.

I did some research and found out the best performing water pump is made by HEPU so I bought a water pump / timing belt kit assembled by HEPU in Germany and sold by GermanParts.ca for CAD$225 + Tax. It comes with a ContiTech timing belt, HEPU water pump, NTN tensioner and NTN tensioner bearing - all high quality parts.

It took me a full day to do because it's my first time doing this. I also bought the water pump bolts, G-13 coolant, crank bolts from Audi as well as a 4L jug of distilled water from my local pharmacy because you're not supposed to use tap water due to the minerals and crap in the tap water.

As it turned out, my water pump wasn't leaking. It ended up being the water pump housing surround because the last idiot who did the timing belt (@ 125,000Km) possibly re-used the water pump and because the O-ring was flattened out on the WP, he used silicone on the WP instead of replacing the O-ring. This is a no-no because you're not supposed to use anything to seal the water pump as it was designed to only use the O-ring. Period!

That's what you get for letting a stranger under your hood. @$(*@&#^* IDIOT!!!

No more coolant smell and I'm getting better heat inside the car. Happy now

Next job: Passenger side transmission seal (gear oil around the axle flange seal) and hub bearing (I'm getting a low droning noise that changes with speed).

Picked up axle flange seal from Audi (CAD$20) and seeking OE quality SKF bearing. Lots of NTN bearings around to buy but I'm one minded and only want SKF. Found a shop that carries SKF bearing for CAD$150 + Tax.

Going down to verify bearing noise later this afternoon before buying the SKF bearing.
