Question for the Pros

Question for the Pros
What kind of damage is caused by putting the car into "park" before it has fully stopped? I know it creates a crunch sound, jolts the car a bit, and I know it's bad for the car, but what actually happens? What signs show that there has been damage caused by doing this (mainly while driving, since I'm not too knowledgable about cars yet)? Thanks, guys.

Re: Question for the Pros
how fast were you going and did this? You grind the gears so the damage can be quite bad! Dont do it ever again! You go from gear one for example to neutral and then into reverse which is where the damage occurs and then you lock the pranny in park = pretty much new transmisson at the least!

Re: Question for the Pros
I drive the car as nicely as I can! My friend did it when I let him test drive it, and I've had it on my mind ever since. It pissed me off so much! I get paranoid with this stuff because I love the car so much!
My car still drives perfectly. I notice that when I turn the car on, go into reverse to back out of my driveway, then put it into drive, and after starting to accelerate a bit, I hear a very quiet metal grindy sound coming from the footwell area, and sometimes I feel a slight vibration on the gas pedal when this happens. I don't know if it was doing this before and I'm only noticing it now because I'm looking! Argh!
We were going very slowly. We were basically in a parking spot, rolling up a bit when he grinded it. Obviously if my tranny was butchered, my car wouldn't drive, but it's possible it created a small problem, right? That's what bugs me right now, lol. I have a warranty, so money isn't a huge problem.

Re: Question for the Pros
Anybody know if this is connected at all? It only seems to happen when I first turn on the car. It doesn't happen when it switches gears while driving, or even when I reverse and then go forward again after I've been driving for a while. I don't know what it is, but it's bugging me.
EDIT:
I just found this online!

First post says exactly what I'm talking about!
"okay
so i was driving my toyota tacoma 03, which is an automatic, back to my house and about 30 ft from my drive way i accidently put my truck in park and it kept going forward then i instantly threw it back into drive.
since then the only thing i notice is when my car is cold i can hear a kind of grinding noise and after about 1 - 2 mins of driving i dont hear it until i restart my truck when its cold. as far as my truck goes i still have full power and i see no change is switching gear. also my truck stays parked without the e brake on hills.
Do you guys think my truck will be fine or that it will get worse over time and ill eventually have to get my trans "repaired"?
also this happened about 3 months ago and my truck still runs fine"

Re: Question for the Pros
Get the tranny fluid changed is my recomendation if there are any parts in there they should be removed with a flush other then that its a waiting game and your friend should pay for it, before he pays for his licence!

Re: Question for the Pros
Thanks, man! I'll take it to a garage and see what they say.
I think I will change the tranny fluid actually.
Is there a certain fluid that you guys would recommend? I like going with high-end stuff if possible!

Re: Question for the Pros
In automatic transmissions there is a parking "pawl" or rod that extends and goes through a hole in the output shaft that locks the transmission.
Look up parking pawl in wikipedia for more information.
Most likely there was some damage when he put it into park while the car was still moving.
Good luck.

Re: Question for the Pros
ONLY USE THE FACTORY FILL! This is VERY important. There are aftermarket automatic transmission fluids around, but pay the little bit extra and get only the audi transmission fluid. If you're having the fluid changed, make sure they take the pan off, replace the filter, and clean out the pan. They'll only get about 2/3 of the fluid, but it's the correct way to do it. Make sure you change the fluid every 100k kms.

Re: Question for the Pros
Hey, thanks a lot, P! If the pawl was in fact damaged, would that be an expensive repair? I'll take your advice on the tranny fluid if I get that done, and thanks for that info as well. I'm having an Audi dealer look at it right now. Had to drive an SUV to work... not quite the same, lol.
