Is this normal?!?
when idle my engine somewhat sounds like a diesel. Just slightly. It has a small peerrr when it is on low rpm's. I have a v6 3.0 02 a4 so it might just be the a normal v6 idle sound. Please help. I need to know if this is a problem so I can fix it fast. Thanks a ton everyone. Holla Back

Re: Is this normal?!?
what up move? yeah it's gentle. I really think I got a deal on this car. everything i have asked seems normal. You get that low pitched whirling when drving in the 35 to 40 mph level? coming from driver side tire. might be wheel bearing I was told. THANKS dude

I have an '04 A4 3.0 and I get same diesel-like noise when idling, it's almost a rythmic sound but very gently. I moved up to a 94 octane but it made no difference. I've had it checked out twice by the dealer and they tell me it's normal. I think it's a quirk in the 3.0 litre.

IMHO all modern Audi gasoline engines available in North America have noticeable valvetrain chatter that make them all sound somewhat like diesel engines, especially when cold. Worse "offender" has got to be the 2.0T though, which sounds even more like a diesel than our 3.0's.

Hey, I own a 2001 Audi S4 and I've got the same rattling noise on startup. You don't really hear it when you drive, but when the car is idling it becomes evident. I think it's normal as many experience the same, but I'm following up with an Audi specialist to make sure it's not a problem... I suggest you do the same.
I find the 2.0T sounds like diesel 100% of the time, whether it's idling or while the engine is revving. I rented one to drive to Montreal and as soon as I was over 3000rpm, it sounded like the engine had trouble handling itself and sounded similar to my friend's 1998 jetta diesel. I'm never, ever buying a 2.0T.
