Default Need brake job after only 30K's. Do I need rotors and pads?

Much to my surprise, it appears that I've worn down, my front brake pads (orange warning light is on). In only 30Ks. I just went to Queensay Audi for them to take a quick peek, and although I have around 1/2 left on my front brake pads, the dealer tells me that I need a brake job because the inner pad may be cooked. They say I'll need front pads and rotors. This sounds like bull to me, but guys, please help me out.

1. Is it possible for the inner pad to wear out much faster then the outer pad? I thought they were setup to wear evenly.

2. Could I just have a faulty sensor?

3. If my pads are cooked, do I have to replace the rotors. I had new rotors put on 18 months ago.

I just can't believe that my brakes have warn out so fast. I always get twice as much life (if not more) on my previous cars. (Saab, BMW, WRX STI)

uhm, usually its the rear pads that should go out first than the front. do u hear any grinding sound when u brake? i suggest you go to a independent mechanic to check it out. and to check your rotors are in need of a brake job check how deep the grooves are from the tip of the rotors, if its deep then yes, if not.. then no. ex. excellent rotor = flat surface. poor = very rigid surface.

oh i forgot to ask.. what type of pads u put on? aftermarket or OEM from when u got the car?

cheap or oem pads suck. get some aftermarket ones.. better quality = less brake dust and be done with it so u wont stress over it.

I hear no grinding noise, at all. The rotors look pretty smooth (from what I can see). I have OEM pads from the dealer. What's a good aftermarket pad?

Also, is it quite common to go through brakes every 30KM's? Normally I've gotten twice that life out of brakes on other cars.

no. that isnt common. and your right, should be around 50k-60k assuming you drive normal and not race down every traffic light you hit.

like i mentioned before, get another opinion, dealership = stealership.

aftermarket brake pads.. hawks pads or any wagner brake pads are one of the top ones i would recommend. where do you live ? if your in the states, ecstuning.. canada partsource/canadian tire or something.

Hi Guys. I got a second opinion..

Front Brakes were done 35K's ago. They look brand new, pads look good, rotors are nice and smooth.

Rear Brakes were done 30K's ago. They are completely cooked, pads are down to almost nothing, and the rotors have grooves in them (i'm not sure what the correct term is)

Both brake jobs were done under the 4 year guarantee. I think I'm getting screwed over. I don't think they even did the rear brake job 30K's ago.... Maybe they "Forgot" to do it when my car was in for service. Anyone else think something screwy is going on here.

Also, when I went to Queensway Audi on Monday to complain about this brake problem, they told me that the sensor is only on the front brakes. So although my front brakes look good and my rears look cooked, they say I need new front brakes and rotors.

lol... maybe theres a sensor malfunction for your front brakes. maybe try to reset it with a OBDII or a vag-com that can reset the sensor indicator to see if it shows again after reseting.

also, since our cars are 40/60 front/rear, the rear tend to burn more pads and the rotor. thats normal, (i thought the same as you did when i got my audi second hand) so i complained and complained until they got fed up and just put on aftermarket brake pads for free only for the rear and haven't gotten a problem since.

im sure your front rotors are fine, just replace the rear brake pads and your still good for another 25k.

but if you do decide to replace the rear pads, just indicate who ever is fixing it, tell them to check the front rotor/pads as well, maybe soemthing is loose or something thats grinding that shouldn't be. better be sure than be sorry later.

the last comment i said is basically intended towards that if you decide to go to an independent shop to do the job, tell them to help u check the front as well.
