Completely stock at the moment.

Thinking of dropping some money on an APR Stage II kit and doing the exhaust.

Chipping will improve off-boost fuel economy, but your fuel economy will be reduced when on-boost. The Volumetric Efficiency (VE) of the engine is increased due to timing advancement, and thus will improve fuel economy at steady-state RPMs. Due to increased boost and fuel-map changes, any 'performance' driving will result in lower-than-stock fuel economy. A downpipe and catback will further increase fuel economy by reducing the pumping losses of the engine.

Since this thread is generally about fuel economy, aside from keeping your vehicle in proper running order, here are a couple of other ways - some simpler than others - to increase fuel economy:

- Specific engine/gear oils - lighter will improve fuel economy, but you need to ensure that the weight is still okay for your vehicle, your driving habits, and your climate
- Longer 5th/6th gear
- Reduce weight (will only really affect city mileage)
- Lighter wheels/tires - as in previous point, but with the added bonus of reducing rotating mass
- Advancing timing
- Low-rolling resistance tires

As a bonus, anything that increases your fuel economy will effectively increase the performance of your vehicle (some body and structural modifications aside).

Common problem points for cars as pertaining to fuel economy, some specific to VAG:

- Coilpacks!
- Vacuum/boost leaks
- Sparkplugs
- N75 (1.8T)
- EGR systems (huge problem on TDIs)
- Electrical issued in the ignition system
- Fuel filter (one of the most neglected maintenance items of all time...)
- Fuel injectors

The worst offender on the 1.8T will be vacuum leaks. Do a tune-up (plugs, filters, fluids), scan your car (and repair accordingly), vacuum/pressure test it and you'll solve 90% of the 1.8Ts issues. Basically stuff that you should be doing regardless of your car suffering from any maladies

Do it. I will deliver a case of your favourite beer to you house if you don't think that it was 'worth' it.

Okay... How much can we trust the trip calculator ? The remaining distance which could be driven based on the quantity of the gas in the tank is calculated according to the driving paterns. I have also noticed that the gas consumption increases when the driver does lots of starts / stops, in other words when driving in a heavy traffic. 95% of my driving happens in the city, but I do not drive in heavy traffic. NEVER ! So, last night the trip calculator told me that with the gas I have in the tank - the needle showed half way between 1/2 and 3/4 - I can drive 520km. I know this is not 100% accurate, but what would be the accuracy precentage ?

My A4 is chiped: APR stage I...
