Default Door lock affected by odometer units?

First of all, hi to everyone! I am happy to find this great forum!!

I have a 2003 A4 1.8T manual. This car comes from the US market and as I am not comfortable with miles/gallons units (I was born in Europe and currently live in Canada), I let the odometer reprogrammed to the metric units in the Audi service. Some time after that (not sure if it was right after or later), the door unlock button and trunk open button both located on driver's door stopped working (while the door lock button still works). I put my car in the Audi service to fix this issue and they told me that to fix that they had to reprogram the odometer back to the original configuration (imperial units) as the car comes from the US market.

Does anyone have similar experience with this? Is that possible? It makes no sense to me. I thought that Audi makes the same control unit for all cars of the same type and just loads different software depending on the market the car is shipped to. Or am I wrong? Nevertheless, I don't understand how changing odometer units should affect the functionality of door unlock button. Is it a bug in the software or is it intentional from Audi? I believe the car was manufactured in Germany, if it makes any difference.

Thanks for any opinion!

Is it that big of a deal for you? It's only the unit of measurement, it wouldn't take that long to get used to the imperial system.

I have an A4 that originated in Quebec so everything is in French! The biggest inconvenience is that the owners manual is in French, but I just ordered an English one off of eBay.

Anyways, my point is to maybe just leave the car as it is because, typically in the world of software, changing one thing can open a can of worms and lead to more problems.

Sorry- sounds like BS to me. Find someone in Victoria with VCDS and a try a bunch of different settings for the instrument cluster (country settiings) and central convenience modules.

I have my 2008 Avant coded for ROW, even though it's a Canadian car and everything works fine.

Thank you guys for the answers.

sburns: is it a big deal - well, thats the question. Sure, I can live without it, but why shouldn't I take advantage of some feature the car does offer? Imagine you lived in US and all gas stations would show prices of gas in Yens... Is it a big deal? Moreover consumption in ml/gl has direct opposite trend than consumption in l/100km as the first function is decreasing while the later is increasing as the consumption grows. This makes it even more inconvenient to switch from one to another.

a4audi4fun: thanks for the advice about VCDS, I will try it!

Sounds like someone programed it without knowing WTF they are doing. The modules are completely different and should not be affected by reprograming the country codes.

Interesting. It was in the authorized Audi service. But actually I am not surprised. Here in Canada I saw 'authorized technicians' repairing the new fridge for over 3 months..

Well the country code should just change which inturn changes from imperial to metric units. Only two areas should have been coded which is the Instrument cluster Module 16 and Central Conveniance module 46 changed country code from USA to Canada which is the next number up
