This is correct. Higher octane fuels (in Canada) use ethanol to stabilize. Ethanol has a lower BTU rating than gasoline which means less power output.

I got sick of spending more at the pump because of the higher octane requirements, so I started using an additive product called Ferox. A dude came to my door selling it and I decided to try it due to his convincing argument. Also, they have a good online video that is pretty convincing too. I bought my car with 20K of mileage and have put another 10K on it using the product. I’ve been using the lowest octane here in Utah which is 85 and it has been running strong. I have an Audi 2005.5 A4 3.2 Quattro and finally went on a road trip to California to test the gas mileage while using the product. On the way home from CA which was about 650 miles, I averaged 29.2 mpg. Also, I get about 23 to 24 mpg in the city if I don’t get on the pedal too much. Of course these tests were done in the summer. I read that in the winter, cars don’t do as well. The product says it will boost horsepower a bit and it sure feels like it. I’ve been telling all my friends about it; I just think it rocks: And no I don’t sell it (but I did think about it). I just think it works really well. My hope is— that if enough people use it, the company won’t go out of business and I can keep using it. The original reason I bought it was not for the better gas mileage, but for its cleaning features. It cleans or burns out the carbon deposits that clog up the motor over time. I paid about $50 US for a bottle of pills that will last me about one year. I bought my recent bottle from a dude in a couple towns over from me, but I think they sell bottles online for about $60 US. Hope this helps.

why the **** u buy an audi if u cant afford 94 octane how the hell do you pay for insurance ...just wait until you take it to the shop your last concern should be spending a couple extra bucks for gas. dam man go buy a honda...and as for the guy who is putting pills in his tank with 85 octane ...i feel bad for the person who buys that piece. what ever happened to reading an owners manual and following what it sais.

caylen why the heck are u so angry?

Hes just suggesting whether or not he can go lower than the standard octane. Nothing to rip someone new to the audi industry apart.

Hes just looking for some cost efficiencies so he can attempt to try and save a buck or two. No one has the same financial stability like u, so cool yourself down a bit.

Just like you said about the next time you go to the shop to have a fix, those extra bucks u save can go towards repairs and u spend much less.. u know?

a) Shell has 0 ethanol in 91 - which is why I use it.
b) Ethanol just ruins crap...do some research

By going to 87, your ECM will retard its timing and it'll work. But you will also notice a decrease in fuel mileage, especially with these high compression engines. You end up saving more money by using premium, prolonging engine life, and getting a smoother idle.

Plus, if you go with Shell, the Nitrogen enrinched gasoline means the fuel detergents are more likely to remain and work efficiently in our direct injection engines. Is it proven? No, but nobody has disproven it, and no large oil mogul is going to be spewing out lies and hoping no other oil mogul is going to catch it...

Then, there's the argument of...you're driving an Audi, put PREMIUM!!

Wow! I didn’t know this topic could raise such a heated debate. I wasn’t going to get into details but it looks like I have no choice. The Ferox additive does some pretty cool stuff. I was originally introduced to it about 8 years ago, but didn’t do much with it until now. The pill that is added to the tank does several things that anyone who cares about the performance of their motor would be interested in. It increased the octane level, adds an average of 10 horsepower (which has been dyno tested), and cleans the motor out by acting as a catalyst (burning the carbon deposits that attach to the motor), which in turn lowers future maintenance. The sight is: feroxinternational dot com (it won't let me put the URL in, so I had to spell it). Like I said, I don’t sell the stuff, I just have found that it works really well and now I no longer need to use the 91 octane when I’m getting such great results. Just today I drove 74 freeway miles and averaged 31 mpg. The reasoning behind using the lower octane is to offset the expense to adding the pill but I’m sure your results would only go up by using both the higher octane and the fuel additive. And yes, when the price of gas is close to 4 bucks a gallon, it’s nice to save where you can.
