Audi A4 1.8T OEM Brake Upgrade

If you are the budget-minded type but don’t want to compromise on a quality brake upgrade for your B6 20v, a 312mm front disc conversion is a great solution. The upgrade utilizes OEM parts to replace the *somewhat undersized* 288mm front rotors to the larger 312mm brakes from the Audi A4 3.0L. The conversion is of the simplest type and should take no longer than a few hours with basic tools. Another good thing about this conversion is that you don’t have to upgrade your calipers or front brake pads. I have done this swap on my A4 and it went quite well, and they fill out the 18” RS4s quite nicely!

Note: You will need to use 16” wheels or larger after doing this conversion. 15” wheels will not clear the larger front brakes.

I am writing this assuming you know how to replace your front pads and rotors. If not, let me know and I can help you out!

Now would be a good time to replace the front pads if they are worn or near their wear limit. It couldn’t hurt to inspect the brake lines, front calipers and suspension and driveline components as well.

Parts Needed:

-Front brake rotors – 2x Audi Part No. 8E0 615 301 R (from the 3.0L B6 A4)

* You can theoretically use any aftermarket rotor for the 3.0L A4, and I decided to use Zimmermann cross-drilled rotors. They are very nice and came cadmium plated for corrosion protection. You can buy all parts from APW with coupon code AUDINOW5 for a discount.

-Front caliper carriers from the 3.0L – 2x Audi Part No. 4B0 615 125 C

- Set of front brake pads – your choice of brand, they are identical to the 3.0L front pads. Audi Part No. 4B0 698 151 K

-Front caliper carrier bolts – 4x Audi Part No. N 908 768 02 (M14x1.5x38mm long)

The procedure is the same as replacing your front pads and rotors normally, except you use the 3.0L carrier and rotor. It’s as simple as that!

I decided to add some flair to the calipers by painting on the rings. If you decide to do this, make sure to use a proper caliper paint. I went with the Dupli-Colour kit from Canadian Tire. It was a comprehensive kit and not too badly priced (I think $25 or so), and had decent instructions. I will soon post an article on how to paint the rings on using a stencil.

8 Months later, the braking has improved noticeably after a nice bed-in period. I haven’t done too many mods to my car other than a Unitronic chip and an APR exhaust, and I find the braking more than adequate for spirited driving. I used Stock replacement pads but will probably go for higher quality ones in the future.
