6spd Manual; Reverse gear not selecting
Hello all, I have an 05 a4 6 spd manual; lately the 1st gear would stick and i have to let go of the clutch and press it again and select, and it would work. today, my reverse gear would not select at all. is it because of the cold? or something seriously wrong?
it would not engage at all, please advise. Thanks.

cold shouldn't affect it. I've driven standards at -30C without problem. I'd check clutch first as it would be lowest cost problem to fix. If not, well then, it could be tranny problem; and that as we know, costs $$$

Re: 6spd Manual; Reverse gear not selecting
Cold can certainly affect gearboxes, specifically the gear oil - some fluids simply cannot handle -30°C temps we see in some of Canada. Does the gear engagement get better when it's warmer out, or as the gearbox oil heats up a bit? Is the problem worse on really cold days?
It's also possible that your shifter is slightly misaligned, or that your clutch is worn to the point that it's barely disengaging when you press the pedal. We need more info to do anything but guess...

Re: 6spd Manual; Reverse gear not selecting
Absolutely oil and most fluids thicken up and exhibit increased viscosity at lower temps, which affects performance in tranny6 and engines, etc., but ram87 is from Markham, and it's only been around -6C lately at worst which should not affect viscosity or shifting unless there's a problem. We haven't had the kind of cold temps around GTA this winter that would affect tranny or engine oil (winter grades of course) except for a few days at most. You're correct in that without seeing or feeling it and with limited info., it's tough to analyse. Does sound more like clutch symptoms than anything else, given what ram87 has said.
