2004 1.8, what to look for?
Looking at buying a used A4 since I cannot afford a 2010 right now. There are a few 2003-2004's that have caught my eye with around 100-150k kms on them. Wondering what kind of problems i should be looking for or considering if I were to buy one of these.
It would have to be AWD and a manual, beyond that are there specific engines or years that i should be avoiding or looking for?

I would look for an Audi that is owned by the original owner with all the service records. This is just to minimize the risk that the odometer has been "rolled back"
I have an 2002 a4 with 247000kms. The major things that i did were timing belt and replacing the Turbo.
If it has been well maintained and you also maintain it , then it could be fine.
They all need certain things every year.
I would count on about 2000 per year in maint or repairs
That is my experience anyway

make sure it has had the timing belt, water pump service which is around 120,000km. That is crucial!
Only issues I have had are a coil pack, rebuilt steering rack, wheel bearing, coolant leak and im at 156k.

Hey there... nice to see another Edmonton Audiphile on Audi Forum.
You should have no trouble finding an A4 on kijiji...price range will vary, but whatever you do, don't go to Alberta Truck and Auto on St. Albert Trail...
They bring in "Lease returns" from down east and flog them at prices that seem REALLY low, but by the time you pay for all the defects, you're no further ahead, and you still have an "Eastern car".
There are a few very common issues with that vintage A4: coil packs, hoses, PCV valve, bearings (wheel), timing belt, water pump, fuel pump, etc.
As everyone says, maitenance records and original owner Alberta car are key factors...
If you're lacking mechanical knowledge for DIY repairs, they can get quite expensive to own.
Send me an e-mail if you need a hand.
