There's no scientific evidence I've seen that confirms any of the claims you hear about it...just anecdotal stuff. Air is 78% nitrogen and you are increasing the level to about 94%.
Adam, a quick drop from 42 to 20 seems strange..sure your gauge is OK?
The gauge is OK. It happened on both my A4 and my wife's A6. I think it has to do with moist air being supercooled and this causes the moisture that is between the tire and the rims to freeze and expand. In addition I have aluminum wheels.

There a big chance that when you installe the new tires on the rims and don't clean the rims before you will get a leak. But temperature change won't get such a high change in pressure.
Not that high anyway.

I think hes over exaggerating. Or can't read a gauge.

And I think that you are right. We bought all 8 tires during winter time and the guy who installed them did not wait untill they thaw. I saw him only brushing the rims with metal brush, and this would not clean them properly.

So what now? I would have to take it to the shop and instruct them to warm them up and clean them I guess.

ummm.. air density?????

Since air is a gas, it expands when heated and contracts when cooled. In most parts of North America, this makes fall and early winter months the most critical times to check inflation pressures...days are getting shorter...ambient temperatures are getting colder...and your tires' inflation pressure is going down!

The rule of thumb is for every 10° Fahrenheit change in air temperature, your tire's inflation pressure will change by about 1 psi (up with higher temperatures and down with lower). What your explaining seems abnormally high, but living in calgary for 5 years, i've experience +10 one day and -25 the next..

How about hard cornering on cold tires. When I leave home in the morning I pretty much explode on third gear to the max from the street to the freeway on the ramp that turns 120 degrees.

The wheels or the tyres? And were they frozen?
